What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I am very excited to introduce Simian Rising to a group of gamers with interests and tastes similar to mine!

Your input will determine the order in which new content is added and help make Simian Rising the best it can possibly be. The game in its current state is far from finished, but offers some real entertainment. I believe the next step is to get players involved.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Simian Rising will likely be in Early Access for a year before all currently planned features are implemented. Depending on your input, features may be added to that list, which would extend that amount of time.

I'll continue work on the project as long as there are players and great new ideas!”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The most immediate additions planned for Simian Rising are new weapon types, ship modules and ship types, and a smoother user interface.

I also plan to increase the power and intelligence of NPC enemies to the point that the more difficult worlds become pretty scary places for an extended stay. I'd like very much to boost the aesthetic of the game through improved artwork, music, and sound effects.

The end goal I would like Simian Rising to achieve is to allow players to explore the possibilities of life as an interdimensional UFO commander, in the same way that other games have made it possible to explore existence as a barbarian, soldier, or cyborg.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Everything highlighted in the "Current Features" section of this page is available and tested for stability and functionality. The most important features already in place are:
  • Procedural generation of many, many worlds.
  • A portal management system that allows you to move directly between worlds, at will.
  • Marching cube voxel terrain that can be mined by the player to collect resources or reach underground objectives.
  • A ship modification system that allows you to add, remove, and configure over 20 types of modules.
  • NPC enemy AI and combat mechanics.
  • A well refined camera system that allows you to switch between first and third person perspectives.
  • Resource storage systems and a resource based ship repair system.

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price of Simian Rising will increase slightly as content and features are added.

At the moment cloud based multiplayer is in testing, but not available to the public. If this is made available to everyone in its current form, server costs would dictate a considerable price increase.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Main avenues of communication will be the Steam Community, the Simian Rising forums, and a publicly viewable Trello board.

This is something I'm excited about and take very seriously. Software and the development process is best when guided heavily by the majority opinion of its users. My intent is to continue developing Simian Rising based largely on the advice of the player community.”

About This Game

Story

You were abducted by the original crew of this ship. With a bit of help from an unexpected ally, you were able to take control of the situation. Now that crew has been reduced to their basic elements, sorted and stored in the hold to use for future repairs.

Escape required some sacrifices. Your consciousness converted to an infinitesimal point, you now have the appearance of a luminous orb. You've also made enemies of some of the most powerful beings known anywhere. In order to survive, you've retreated to the fringes of the multiverse. Everything here is foreign and sparse in comparison to what you knew. Your ally assures you it's the safest place to begin recovery.

Your abductors thought of you as an animal. They didn't believe you could comprehend their communications, but you picked up enough to figure out that they were amused by your genetic similarity to a chimp, and that they anticipated using you in some very cruel experiments.

They picked a fight with the wrong simian.

Current Features

  • Take control of a ship with capabilities almost beyond imagination. Use it to exact revenge on the beings who forced you into this new and strange situation.
  • Visit a vast array of worlds. Each has its own variety of sun, ocean, foliage, sky, day and night cycles, terrain, resources, and enemies.
  • Collect resources by tunneling through terrain or chopping off mountain tops.
  • Create portals to jump from one world to any other.
  • Store absurd amounts of resources in your secure null-space dimension, and some on your ship to help with repairs.
  • Save ship configurations and load them instantly to suit your circumstances. Did I mention you're an ultraterrestrial now? The rules you knew are no longer relevant.
  • Challenge yourself with optional timed game modes. See how quickly you can get through a set of checkpoints or clear a world.
  • Customize your ship by adding modules. Make it stronger, more efficient, or more specialized.
