What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We’ve got a game we feel is worthy of Early Access. All the core pieces of the game are there. There are 16 Townsfolk, 13 Heroes, 12 Dungeons and 10 Enemy types, each with their own unique story. There are 27 Shapes for Weapons, Armour and Tools and 24 Alloys, each of them customizable with a number of unique modifications. Many of the game's stories and cutscenes have been implemented. The game is not lacking for variety and things to do.

Maly and I have been working on the game for exactly one year. Before I can call the game finished, there are several things we need to do. We are a tiny studio of two working out of our living room, a couple, so resources are tight and we need to work day jobs. For the last few months we have been able to work exclusively on the game, and we would like to be able to continue doing so. If the game does well in Early Access, we can do even more.

The other main reason for Early Access is to gain feedback on the game. I cannot call a game finished until it has been tested and approved by a volume of players. Early Access allows us to get that feedback.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“2-4 Months, depending on community feedback.

We want to show our sustained dedication to making Blacksmith truly great by releasing updates as often as the budget allows, with full transparency. Ideally, updates will be weekly and the game will see a full release in a couple of months or less. It all depends on the feedback and response of the players.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“What the game has so far.
- Everything you can see in the trailer or screenshots is fully featured in the game.
- Play the first half of the main story of Blacksmith, as well as side quests for most of the existing Heroes and Townsfolk.
- 16 Townsfolk, 13 Heroes, 12 Dungeons and 10 Enemy types, 27 Shapes for Weapons, Armour and Tools, 24 Alloys and more. Many of the game's stories and cutscenes have been implemented.
- Live each day as a Blacksmith, taking care of your customers and progressing their stories.

Improvements between now and Full Version:
- The main story will finish being implemented within the first few weeks of Early Access.
- There will undoubtedly be many bugs based on different systems. We need help to find those bugs and squash them.
- Some visual details.
- More music!
- Many things I have planned, including an in-game card game.
- Even more scripted stories and cutscenes.
- Polish.
- A couple of major updates to allow upgrading the town of Ironwell with walls, docks and a whole collection of new buildings, Townsfolk, Heroes and maybe more, with stories and cutscenes to go with it.

Between today, Monday 19th March 2018, and release, we are working to improve the game even more and will keep updating this page with what we have added.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Just announced. We hope to add more between now and release.

As stated above:
We’ve got a game we feel is worthy of Early Access. The game is not lacking for variety and things to do.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Naturally I think people who get Early Access should get a discount. Therefore final release of the game will cost more.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I want as much community involvement as we can manage with our two person team. We hope to gather feedback and suggestions via the Steam forums and review sections to help us prioritize what to improve. If there is demand, we can create a Reddit or Discord community or something similar. It will be up to the community to help me decide when the game is ready to leave Early Access.

As much community involvement as possible.”

The Sparks Update

Hi Everyone,

It's been a few weeks since an update. I'm waiting for the music before I unlock the final scenes in the game and get ready for final release.

I have, however, received some new art. So this update includes more decorations in the Dungeons, sprites for Weapon Handles and a few basic fixes and tweaks.

Also, we've introduced a new Hero complete with their own Story, as a thank you for your patience bearing with us while we wait for the music. This is a pure homage to my favourite anime. It is unlocked after finishing Val's Story.

At present the game is very stable and playable. Once I get the music I can finish the Main Story and release an update which should be much more representative of the final product.

Until then, let those Sparks fly and see you in a couple weeks or so.

Cheers,
Otis

Progress Update

Hi Everyone,

I've just uploaded a build which deals with a lot of little bugs in the story and gameplay.

Right now what I'm doing is fixing the final cutscenes. I'm currently waiting for art and music assets before I upload that content. We're looking at having the first draft of the finished game by the end of August.

The main thing I want feedback on is the Farms/Food system. I'm happy that the player gets to do some farming, but I feel that actually it's quite tedious. I'm thinking of overhauling it with a much simpler system where you get 'ingredients' in the Dungeon, then Trade with the Farmer to cash in combinations of those ingredients for meals with permanent stat boosts. Or perhaps I'll just streamline the current system. Everyone's thoughts are appreciated on that.

There may still be a couple of instances of Hero Stats changing permantly after a cutscene or something similar. If you spot any instances like this, please let me know and I'll fix them promptly.

See you all later in August as Blacksmith approaches the finish line! Get your Heroes strong for the end!

Cheers,
Otis and Maly

About This Game

Forge Your Story!

Blacksmith is the definitive Blacksmithing experience. Make and sell Weapons, Armour and Tools. Send Heroes on Quests and unlock their unique potential. Grow the town of Ironwell and be a part of the community. Master the elements and bend them to your will! Find your true calling as the Blacksmith!

Everything that appears in the trailer and screenshots is fully implemented in the current version of the game.

Make and Sell Weapons, Armour and Tools:
A unique crafting system allows for countless possible unique items. Smelt up to 24 different Alloys in the Smelter, hammer them into 27 shapes on the Anvil, customize them even further with Helms, Arms, Blades, Styles, Handles, Enchants, and Dyes, and sell them to the Heroes and Townsfolk.

Dungeons and Quests:
After equipping Heroes, send them to Dungeons to gain resources and advance the story. Equipping the Townsfolk well means they will heal faster and have access to more Spells and Abilities. It's not just about earning Coin, the better you equip clients, the better it is for everyone in Ironwell.

Grow the town of Ironwell:
As you and your fellow Townsfolk's Coin grows, you can help to build new buildings and upgrades. Go from a small run down village to a large town complete with roads, shops, church, fleurist and of course a Wizard Tower. And more to come with updates!

Be a part of the community:
Each Townsfolk and Hero in Ironwell is unique, with their own story and gameplay advantages. As you equip them, gain rapport and fulfill various objectives, you will advance their story and gain new tools to help improve Ironwell and yourself as the Blacksmith.

Master the Elements and bend them to your will:
Imbue your steel with the Tail of a Phoenix or the Bones of your Ancestors. Enchant Weapons with Fire, Ice or Lightning to Burn Cloth or Zap Plate. Learn new Spells, Abilities and Recipes to become the best Blacksmith the world has ever known.

Find your true calling as the Blacksmith:
There are many ways to play Blacksmith. Will you sit back, relax, and let the Clients come to you? Or will you ravenously devour the secrets of Ironwell, not wasting a day? Forge your own story!

Planned Updates:
Updates are scheduled every 2 weeks from release day. Here is a rough breakdown of updates which is very much subject to change and circumstance:

April.
The Quench Update: General fixes and improvements, including the Quench feature.

May.
The Mines Update: More Dwarfs and Mines themed Dungeons, Enemies, Heroes and Townsfolk, as well as an entire Mining minigame/sidequest feature that should provide a lot of content.
The Farms Update: More Farming themed content, as well as an entire farming minigame/sidequest feature.

June.
Giving a break to Maly, the artist, this month, focusing less on new content and more on gameplay.
The Silk Road Update, which will introduce a shop keeping feature so you can live out that weapon shop fantasy.
The Apprentice Update, which will introduce an Apprentice Blacksmith to free up the player's time, among other things. July should see Blacksmith feature complete.

July.
Finishing the Story, fixing the bugs, finishing the artwork, balancing and filling in any gaps in the game. By the end of July we should have announced the date of our transition to full release.

More to be announced as time goes by.
