Why Early Access?

“D.F.R.: The Light is a challenging first-person survival horror game. You have twenty-minutes to accomplish a series of tasks in order, all while being hunted mercilessly by a ghostly light. I'm a lone developer, so it's important to me to get advice that'll help make this game the best game it can possibly be.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Hopefully no longer than 6 months to a year, but it's hard to pinpoint an exact date. Most importantly, I want the game to be stable and fun when released.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“This is an early beta of the game, however the core engine of the game is completed, including the unique behavioral A.I. and reward/punishment system. The early access beta is very, very playable, and is a complete game within its own right. All footage in the trailer (released at time of Early Access) is from actual gameplay. The world map is done, though there will be additions made to it over time to enhance re-playability and reliability. And eventually, if there's interest from the community, I'd like to make other levels, include multiple ghosts as an option, and make the difficulty changeable.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, the price of the game will change according to the new content and features. Only the players who bought the Early Access version will get the game, and any future updates, at the current price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I'm actively seeking feedback to make the game a more immersive experience. In the coming weeks, I hope to roll out a Facebook, YouTube and/or Twitter feed to gather insight. There's also the community hub, which I'm hoping will have spirited discussions.”

Update v1.4 now live!

I'm excited to announce the biggest update thus far. Here's what's new!

1. New and separate endings for NORMAL and NIGHTMARE difficulty modes.
2. Improvements to models and environment.
3. Gameplay enhancements, especially for NIGHTMARE mode.
4. New achievements, including the CROWN OF DEATH winnable only by beating the game in all three difficulty modes.
5. New punishment added!
6. Quality improved post processing!
7. Internal settings menu.
8. Rebuilt portions of the AI - (The game will play slightly different)
9. More balanced gameplay between difficulties
10. And many behind the scenes enhancements!

Update v1.3 Live Now!


I'm excited to announce that version 1.3 is available. I've listened to the input and this is what's come of it.

Included in this build!

1. Additional models within the world
2. Improvements of assets.
3. Lighting improvements for the three different difficult settings
4. *Balancing of difficulty settings (This was the big one!)
5. Other bug fixes and improvements.

*Apparently, there was a bug that made Nightmare mode easier than Normal mode in some instances. This bug was an unexpected consequence of the AI working how it was designed to work prior to having difficulty levels. This has been fixed!

In this relentlessly terrifying survival horror game, you must use your wits to stay alive long enough to extinguish the light, or perish trying. But be warned: the light is crafty and observant, so this won't be an easy challenge.

D.F.R.: The Light is a single-player, first-person survival horror game with a heavy emphasis on stealth. It doesn't rely on jump scares, but instead builds a sustained feeling of dread in the player with its unique "reward/punishment" game mechanics and increasingly aggressive behavioral artificial intelligence.
