Why Early Access?

“STARCATCHER is an experimental personal project, developed on the weekends. It's fun and challenging now, so I've decided to make it available as I continue to work on it. I'll use feedback to tune its difficulty and features. IT IS EARLY, please do not purchase if you have doubts about jumping in at this stage. Wishlist it instead!

If you're okay with unfinished, and you're looking for some inexpensive, innovative, and challenging arcade fun, jump on in.

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Unknown. Hopefully by the end of 2018, ideally much sooner.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The main changes will be additions/tweaks to enemy wave types, weapons, and shields as I get more feedback about what works and what doesn't. I may also do work in the menus/settings (such as remappable controls and more visual options).

I'll refine the audio/visual experience over time, but please do not expect huge improvements to graphics, sound, presentation, etc. It's programmer art now, and it'll likely be programmer art at the end.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Currently the game is a 25-wave score challenge, with 7 unique weapons and 7 unique shields. This format may well change as I add more content, but it's essentially a full game, playable from start to finish.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price may go up slightly as I add new content and features. i'll update as soon as I have concrete plans.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I'm looking for feedback! I don't personally know anyone who can survive past level 2, which makes me think it's too hard, but I suspect there are a ton of people on Steam who will find it too easy. If that's you, I need your help. This game will sink or swim on getting the difficulty just right.”

About This Game

(Note: pre-release development on this project is on hold indefinitely.) STARCATCHER is an experimental wave-based arcade game, currently in development. It's simple, unique, and intensely hard. Protect the heart!

GAMEPLAY
As waves appear, your goal is to shoot enemies with your matching-colored gun (blue) and intercept shots with your matching-colored shield (yellow). Your character is invincible (no need to dodge), but if anything touches the heart, it's game over. It starts simple, but soon you will have to make complex choices and have fast reflexes to survive. Every few waves, you'll evolve, getting an all-new weapon and shield combo.

WEAPONS
Master a wide array of weapons, each with its own drawbacks and advantages. Some, like the Laser and Rail, are piercing instant-hit weapons, others provide a wide areay or offer a fast fire rate.

SHIELDS
Every shield has a unique shield burst (performed by pressing Shield while jumping). Use them to clear screenfuls of bullets, erect a shield around the heart, or even hover and fly.

EXPERIENCE
Enter a trippy arcade world of giant voxel text and glitchy glowy lights. You will die, a lot, but instant restarts and non-resetting music keep the joy flowing.
