What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“While HammerHelm is in a very playable state, it is not "finished" and contains some placeholder assets. Since releasing HammerHelm I have already added a ton of new content including new Dwarf characters, new town buildings and jobs, a new game world, a bunch of new quests, new monster art and updated combat, and more! I plan to add even more new features and build more quests and content.

Also, while there are lots of things I want to add to the game, I'd like to get feedback from the community regarding what you like about the game and where you'd like to see it go from here!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“By the end of 2019”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of HammerHelm will have more quests and more buildings for your town. It will also include lots more features and updated monster art to replace the placeholders. Your feedback will also greatly influence the direction HammerHelm takes. The new features and quests will be added over time while HammerHelm is in Early Access.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“You can create a character, build a town, adventure with your character, interact with townspeople, go on quests, craft and upgrade your equipment, build and decorate your own house, and battle monsters. There is currently a lot to do in the game! HammerHelm is in Alpha, most of the core systems are in but not all of the content is available yet.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price might increase when HammerHelm leaves early access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I plan on being very active on the forums and taking community feedback to help shape the future of the game. Getting feedback on the kinds of quests and events that you would like to see, new buildings, additional features, etc.”

Townspeople Optimization Test Build - Alpha 13.4.1

Updated the test build with some more changes to the code for pathfinding that is a bit more efficient and handles making sure NPCs don't walk away when you are speaking to them. This is actually a much bigger change to the NPCs than yesterday's build so I'm going to spend more time testing it.

Any feedback from those of you who have time to check it out would be most appreciated too!

This build also includes some other fixes:
  • You can no longer place a building if the road is outside of the town's build area.
  • Fixed some optimization bugs that caused doors and NPC items (like hammers, pitchforks, etc) to disappear even when they were in view.
  • Updated the windmill blades to have some canvas rather than just wood. Looks nicer imo. I may have already pushed this live, but I didn't mark it in any patch notes so including it here.

If you'd like to try out the test build, you can get it by doing this...

1. In the Steam Client Library where it lists all of your games, right click on HammerHelm
2. Click Preferences
3. In the window that opens, select the "Betas" Tab
4. Enter the password to download this build - PerfTest2019 - and click Check Code
5. You should get a message that the code is correct
6. Click the drop-down box and select BigUpdateTest

Steam should immediately start a new download with the test client. The new game should be called "HammerHelm [bigupdatetest]". Once the download is complete you can launch the game. The build is Alpha 13.4.1.

To get back to the Alpha client:

1. In the Steam Client Library where it lists all of your games, right click on HammerHelm
2. Click Preferences
3. In the window that opens, select the "Betas" Tab
4. Choose “None” from the drop down
5. Steam should then revert back to the Alpha client

Townspeople Optimization Test Build - Alpha 13.4

I created a test build so you can try out the new townspeople AI optimizations. While still using the same pathfinding system, this was a fairly good sized change to the way the NPCs move about the world.

In a very large town of 50 townspeople on my mid-range test PC, I saw a framerate boost from about 40 to about 65! Most of this was a result of lightening the load on the CPU from the NPCs.

This build also has a couple of other smaller fixes in it:
  • Fixed a bug that caused the third ingredient in the last item in the crafting list to not display.
  • Fixed a bug where Farmers would use the run animation while moving at walk speed.
  • The ESC key can now be used to close the town storage UI.
My goal is to get this build live this weekend if all goes well.
