What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We really wanted early feedback from fans of the Redwall books on things like look, narrative, tone, music etc. It was -and is- a high priority that we capture the spirit of the books and what better way to do that than get the fan base looking around as early as possible. Back in December 2017 we released the first level to early access and were in constant conversation with the fans that completely redirected the direction of the game. In the last 7 months, Redwall has overhauled the control scheme from cinematic to skill based, reworked character models to match a new art direction, and delved deep into exploring the possibilities of a never-before-seen dynamic scent system. All in all, we belive it to be a success and are proud to release Redwall with Beta functionality, raising the price, and looking forward to future content updates that will bring, new levels, animated cinematics, and a robust cooking system.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“3-6 weeks”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

A deep, compelling storyline
Original composed and performed soundtrack
Voice overs from both new and established actors
New dynamic scent system
Collectible lore, real recipes, and a mailbag minigame that spans levels
(Future updates) Animated Cinematic Scenes
(Future updates) A uniquely inspired Food Crafting system with actual consequence
(Future updates) Saved data that carries to other games in the series
(Possible future build) 2 Playable Characters
(Possible future build) multiplayer minigame

The final game is expected to cover ~2-5 hours of gameplay and act as an Act 1 of a 3 act episode of a 4 episode series that culminates in a multi-player co-op adventure.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

Redwall debuts a dynamic scent system, unlike any game before it. Rather than stagnant, pre-designed paths that imitate scent, Redwall’s particles read the wind and the world to simulate realistic currents and pools. Scents themselves consist of parts and patterns that can clue the observant player can use to discern the source.

Outside of scent Redwall is alive both friend and foe each sporting their own stories, values, and motives. It’s up to the player to decide whether they will prioritize the mission and leave them to save themselves, or take the time to lend a helping paw.

As a new member of the Lilygrove Scout Corps, you may not be able to fight, but you’re clever, fast, and capable of some amazing leaps and daring stunts. Shimmy along ledges, scramble sheer cliffs, even squeeze through impossibly small spaces. With courage, faith, and friends by your side, Lilygrove’s fate rests in your paws.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“As of beta release, the price will be raised to its new permanent price tag. Those who purchase the game whilst still in early access will be treated as having "Season Pass" access to the future acts of the Scout. After the game goes into full release, the new price will be per act, per episode.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We've already established a solid pattern and reputation for soliciting and using feedback from the Redwall fan base via the Facebook page we've maintained for the last couple of years during pre-production.

We will continue to seek input on glitches, optimization, and other issues an keep that same spirit of community and cooperation in full effect. We have built an integrated feedback mechanism and messaging system for robust two-way communication.”

Beta! It's totally real...

After entering Early Access in December last year, and many iterations in the last seven months, we're ready to call this thing a Beta build.

"Beta" can be a slippery word so here's what WE mean by "Beta"
* We're working on bugs
* We're working on performance
* We're working on controls
* No more features are being added (yet)
* No more content is being added (yet)

If you've been lurking and hanging out, now is a good time to buy. We want, nay, we NEED your feedback to find every bug, glitch, and sneaking vermin before we go full release. As a motivation all Early Access purchases will be counted as full Season Passes when we go live which will get all three acts of The Scout when they release for the price of one. But this offer is only good until we release in full. After that - it's one episode at time for you boyo!
...If you're already in the EA group - you're already included in this deal. :)

What We've Been Up To:

If you are the proud owner of this game already but haven't played the build in a while, we'd like to invite you to take a look. The core levels have been polished and finalized, voice overs have been added, and every day more and more bugs are removed! After a warm reception at Portland's own Game Developers Conference, we are proud to call this game nearly complete.

Just A Taste Of The Newest Material:

-Hours of professional Voice Overs
-Updated Art
-Polished Quests
-NPC group mechanic
-Smarter, Deadlier Rats
-Faster Ladders
-Updated Lighting
-Smoother FPS and Much Optimization

What You Can Look Forward To In Future Updates:

-Animated Cinematic
-Polished Animations
-Reworked Dialog System
-New Mini-Levels with a Verminous Focus
-An In-Depth Cooking System
-New Ingredients
-More Lore
-Polished End-Level Records Screen
-Polished Save System
-Refined Scent Trails
-And more :)

Thank you for your support, your patience, and your enthusiasm! We look foward to hearing from you!

07 July 2018 Steam Early Access Build : Combined Tech and Content Update V 0.95

Since the previous build we've been tackling some very specific bugs and performance issues that will benefit from a wider QA base then our internal team.

Which - By the Way - HUGE shout out and thanks to the folks on the Discord channel (https://discordapp.com/channels/401134689777090582/401138082637938688) for being such thoughtful, helpful, groovy help along this crazy path!

We're likely to be putting up some incremental builds pretty quickly in the next couple of weeks.

Now in Beta

Beta is intended to be the beginning of the end - no new features, no new content, and all major updates will focus on bug fixes and responding to feedback from our players as it comes in. However, Soma Games is taking a Minecraft like approach to our release. First and Foremost we will attend to the bugs, glitches, and issues that will inevitably arise. Then we have two content based updates with non-critical but still exciting polish details including but not limited to a new level, a cooking system, and updated cinematic cutscenes!

About This Game

The Scout is the first episode in Soma Games' Lost Legends of Redwall. Set in the wildly popular world of best-selling books, Redwall, by Brian Jacques.

Not too far from the storied walls of Redwall Abbey is a small village of mice and moles called Lilygrove. Our hero, Sophia, is the newest member of the Lilygrove Scout Corps, a group of woodland rangers tasked with the protection of the little village and trained in the ancient ways of woodcraft. But her graduation is cut short by the sudden raid from a band of sea rats led by the brutal wearet, Scumsnout. It will take all of her wit and guile to make it out alive and all the way to Redwall to call for help!

The Scout is our first Redwall episode and is a new story that takes place in the middle of winter, about 6 months prior to the events of the book, Redwall. Future episodes tell the tales of three reluctant heroes who each find themselves inside Redwall Abbey for deeply personal reasons when it is besieged by Cluny the Scourge. Thrust into a suddenly dramatic situation the three strangers become fast friends and wind up in a critical, but as-yet unsung role in the events that bring the sword of Martin the Warrior to Matthias and the end to that villain Cluny the Scourge.

As the first episode in the series, The Scout is best understood as a stealth-adventure game set in the winter before the Summer of the Late Rose. It tells the story of a mouse who is driven to Redwall Abbey when sea rats raid the peaceful village of Lilygrove. The events of The Scout play out along the ancient, but now altered, course of the mighty River Moss. What was once a wide river is now the sunken bed of a seasonal creek that that runs east-west between Redwall Abbey and the Great South Stream that feeds the swamps south and east of Salamandastron. The player must find a way through the confusing snow-covered channel punctuated by occasional hedgerows, ancient stone walls, scattered shacks, and the few-and-far-between hearths of friendly woodlanders.

Along the way there is untold adventure to include (of course) feasting, fiddling, and even a few fisticuffs as we meet Valo Scrimpaw, the mysterious stoat who lives in the Winsome Wraith, Scumsnout the murderous weret and the mysterious, ghostly assistance when all seems lost.
