What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We have lots of ideas for what this VR experience could become but want to build a community of users that inform where we prioritise our efforts and make something that people want to spend time in exploring. For museums and attractions we want to give them an opportunity to have free content for them to experiment with their visitors a room-scale VR experience and then give us user feedback to help us improve the experience.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Approx. 6 months”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“There will be more modes of play. Many of these will be introduced during early access so we can get essential feedback. We plan to add extra objects. Holographic guides. Rich and dynamic contextual information about the objects. Mini-games and timed experiences with simple local leaderboard functionality for attractions to gamify the experience and add a competitive element.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version is stable and free of any major bugs. Most of the space objects are modelled, textured and lit to a good standard, those that have less detail will be developed over time. The default control scheme is good for first time VR users who have never used VR controllers before and haven’t had chance to do a tutorial. It is tested with both Vive Controllers and Oculus Touch. There is also an experimental advanced rotation option available in the options menu for those that want to try this and provide feedback. You can teleport to each objects by firing your laser pointer at the green orbs. There are some sound effects to give a basic atmosphere.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, based on user feedback we are considering a freemium model for home users with additional paid for downloadable content such as extra object sets and mini-games. For museums and visitor attractions we expect a different licensing model to be determined based on consultation with what works for different venues.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will be inviting people to vote on feature inclusion. We really want people to tell us what they want in the experience.”

About This Game

The ObserVRtarium is an interactive, room-scale VR, virtual museum experience. Go beyond the glass and get up close with a collection of amazing past and present space artefacts including the Soyuz, ISS, Saturn V, Apollo LEM and Apollo LRV. Using your VR controllers you can manipulate the objects to get a perfect view of every detail. Once you’ve explored the models you can teleport to the objects around the room which are created at an accurate human scale so you can get a real sense of what it is like to stand at the foot of the epic Saturn V rocket that took humans to the Moon and how the Soyuz craft which takes 3 Astronauts at a time plus supplies to the ISS is maybe smaller than you thought!

The experience is suitable for home VR users and we also encourage museums and attractions who want to experiment with room-scale VR but are struggling to find appropriate educational material to give it a try.

Check out our early access details to read more about what we have planned in the future, this is just the start of building our virtual museum and we want to know what you want to see in it. We are actively looking for museum and science centre partners who are interested in finding ways to digitise and explore their collections in VR.

Produced by NSC Creative, The Immersive Storytelling Studio based at the National Space Centre, UK.
