Why Early Access?

Heart. Papers. Border. is not feature or content complete. The reason we want to launch now is because we feel we have enough developed to validate the concept, existing features and to get community’s help for the remaining features. This is a hobby project and progress is slow so please do not buy this game unless you really want to support us. If you do buy it, please consider yourself part of the team - give us your feedback, it is extremely valuable to us!

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

Heart. Papers. Border. will be out from Early Access when it's done. We hoped we would finish it in 1 year, but life happened in a very life-y way which forced us to continue Heart. Papers. Border. as a hobby project. We are still very committed to it and work as much as we can, but the progress is very slow - we are sorry for that!

For the record, we are two people working on this game in our spare time, which means evenings and weekends. We both work in the games industry and our jobs are quite demanding, often exceeding 8 hours a day. This is why progress is so slow.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Currently, Heart. Papers. Border. is an early alpha proof of concept that features almost all base gameplay mechanics and 2 countries implemented to allow proper play. We are also giving access to every content we finish, even if it is not ready - for example, we release graphical content such as countries and objectives even if they do not have any quests, encounters or hashtags assigned yet

Some of the Features that we will add
  • Influence system that will show the player clearly what impact she generates as she travels and blogs
  • Many more Apps for the SpacePad, such as Location which will show varied information about each country and objectives, as well as a much more extensive Travel Journal that contains detailed logs for travels and units spent

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Currently, Heart. Papers. Border. has only 2 countries available, will almost all their objectives, encounters and quests. The end game will feature 26 countries, each with at least three touristic landmarks, as well as multiple quests and encounters. You can now visit almost all countries and objectives but many of them lack descriptions, quests, encounters, hashtags etc.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

Heart. Papers. Border. costs 7.99 USD. We do not know if we will change the price when we are done.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We need our community feedback for the upcoming features and also since almost all our countries are inspired by real life countries, we need local players to help us improve the content we generate.”

It's been a long time coming - update 0.1.5.20841



FLASHING LIGHTS WARNING!
We added a Day/ Night cycle and it can be upsetting if you have problems with flashing lights. This is by default ON but you can turn it OFF in the Settings. It can be disturbing especially if you play the game on Fast Forward/ high speed.



Hey everyone!

It's been a long time since we updated Heart. Papers. Border.. So this update is pretty big, and I will probably forget to mention some of the stuff we have added. The game is, however, far from done. I look forward for your feedback!

What is new
  • All the countries for which we have graphics done are now available and can be visited once you finish the last quest in Sputnik City. They DO NOT have any quests, encounters or hashtags yet, however
  • We added a day/night cycle which needs *A LOT* of tweaking but I think it adds to the game
  • You can now see how much time you spend in every objective and in every country, in the SpacePad Location app
  • We added the so called Birthday Mechanic which means you get a Space Cake when you grow older :) For now this is just aesthetics but this plays a crucial role for the end game
  • We added more portraits you can play with, all of them inspired by fantastic real life people to whom we owe a great deal of thanks <3
  • When you start a new game, we randomize the selection of portrait and gender
  • We started to work on Influence. This is by far ready, but you can see how influential you are in each country from the SpacePad Location app
  • The Blog has been optimized to support double click. So just double click on the hashtags you want to use
  • We have done countless minor updates which should make the game play smoother
  • We probably added more stuff that we forgot to keep track of. Note to self - keep track of what you add!

There are many KNOWN ISSUES.
Like some of the popups overlap in a non optimal way, many of them can be cut which is super annoying. Notifications pile up and we will refactor that system so you can use the SpacePad to browse through notifications instead of letting them clutter the UI. The Day / Night cycle is something that needs a lot of optimizing and frankly I am super eager to make the night version of our objectives and I also want to work with the roads for this.

Keep in mind - when you unlock all countries, you can see the TRAVEL button active but if you do not have enough uNits, nothing happens when you click on it. We will disable it with a message if you do not have enough uNits, just like it happens when you don't have a visa.

And of course there is a lot of work to do for the influence system, the SpacePad in general and Blog minigame in particular, and I will redesign the entire encounter/ quest system. Just so you know - its a long way to go.

Updates are coming (aka, this project is not abandoned)

Hey awesome people!


We are still working on HPB. Slowly, because life happened in pretty extreme ways, but we have no intention to abandon this project.

Those of you who have beta access might have noticed that we unlocked all countries. We do not have quests and encounters yet, but we plan to unlock whatever we do have and go from there. There are some fixes we need to do until we push this update to public.

You are a freelance adventurer who wants to experience everything planet Heart has to offer, regardless of the inherited privileges determined by the country of your birth.

The current Heart. Papers. Border. build is in Early Access because it is an Early Alpha build featuring enough core mechanics and content to let you, awesome players, help us develop the best possible game from this concept!

Concept

You travel to learn, and as you pay a closer attention to what each country has to offer, you gather wisdom that you channel in a blog that grows in popularity. Eventually you come to grasp the power of your influence: where you pass, things change faster to the better, and locals that you have met increasingly demand openness from their governments. You have always been an optimist and dreamed of a completely border free world, but as you travel, you realize your influence into actually living to see your dream come true - that of living in a world without borders!

Visuals

Heart. Papers. Border. is inspired by NASA's Visions of the Future posters, The Jetsons' cartoon series and current real life events. We chose vibrant colors and a retro futuristic style to gently remind you that Heart, just like Earth, is moving towards openness, kindness and love, even though the movement might sometimes seem too slow to notice. But you can always make a difference!

Gameplay

Heart. Papers. Border. is as easy or as challenging as you want it to be. Through very simple control mechanics and up front information, you can strategize an optimal life that allows you to see the last border disappear in the course of your long and safe life. With multiple win conditions, challenging puzzles and morally difficult quests, Heart. Papers. Border. simply asks you how do you choose to live this virtual life

So how will you play?

  • Create your Multipass and choose your Citizenship (Easy, Med, High, Random); this determines your starting conditions
  • Take a look at your native country, look at the Top Bar to see your situation and starting conditions
  • Click on touristic objectives to visit them, click on countries to apply for Visas and then visit them
  • Gather hashtags from visiting objectives and write blog posts in your SpacePad
  • Gain followers, become influential, and notice how planet Heart responds to your actions

  • This is a Pre Alpha game, and we have many features in the pipeline which are Work in Progress now. If you wish to keep track of our progress, we shared our live game design wiki so check our presence on the web. Please keep in mind:
  • We aim to launch the first version of Heart. Papers. Border. somewhere this summer
  • This is an evolving game, we aim to progressively update it until we or our community is out of ideas (which we hope is for years to come)
  • We practice Open Game Design and welcome any feedback

Team

The core team is composed of Laura and Sebastian, who have been thinking about this idea long enough to invest their savings and spare time into actually building it. We were joined by the brilliant Pontus Lundén (The Westport Independent) for art and by the amazing Retro Brothers (of Easily Embarassed fame) for music
