Why Early Access?

“The short answer: the game is not 100% complete yet (probably closer to 88%).

Metacell: Genesis ARCADE was created by a small team. Well, not so much a team… more of a guild. The IP flies under the Products for Robots banner, but the development team is made up of a handful of people (rogues if you will) with a passion for making games.

We first began development in 2011 as Metacell: Genesis. The original version took a full 6 months of dedicated work to create a solid prototype. A fruitless Kickstarter attempt was made, and shortly after that life happened. We have been able to work on it sporadically here and there ever since.

Metacell: Genesis made it through Steam Greenlight in 2015, but with the game not being completely done and due to our individual circumstances, development paused since we didn’t have the resources needed to finish it the way we wanted. Life moved on, our families grew, and we continued to press on as weekend warriors, steadily moving the game toward completion.

So, to wrap up the long answer, after 10 years enough was enough. We weren’t going to let our game sit on a dusty shelf. It was time to make it worthy of release. We rebranded the game as Metacell: Genesis ARCADE and focused on the release of the core game mode. Though there are many things left to do for an official release, it's closer than ever before. With the help of Early Access and the Steam community, Metacell: Genesis ARCADE will continue to get better and better :)”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“6-8 months.

We decided to move several features to an early patch after release, which at our current pace can help us achieve that fairly reasonable timeline. It may go faster if Early Access sales allow us to make more time for development.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Here is the short list of what we need to finish before our Release launch:

Arcade Game Mode

The core gameplay of Metacell: Genesis ARCADE rests in Arcade Mode, a fast-paced survival battle to defeat the Metacell and earn the high score!

Steam Leaderboard

Your score will be posted to our Leaderboard at the end of each game. It currently displays Rank, Username, Level, Score, and Time.


Full disclosure: we ran all of our copy through Google Translate. An effort was made, but we still apologize for the “all your base” translation. We’re just a ragtag band that are not multilingual. We want your languages to be correct! The functionality is there, and so we humbly ask the community for input with localization. To the native speakers of any and all Earth based locations, if you want to see Metacell localized in your language so do we! Contact us and we will make it happen :)

Font Engine

Metacell: Genesis ARCADE uses it's very own Font Engine. Gets the job done.

Cheat Codes

We enjoy retro style cheat codes, but we wont post your score to the leader board if you cheat (cause that would be cheating).

Stand-In Sound Effects

10 years ago (when Metacell: Genesis ARCADE was just Metacell: Genesis), we had zero resources for our audio needs. Half of the sounds were made with Poseys mouth and then shoddily edited into something passable by G. Most of those sounds have slowly been replaced, and MK² is currently in the process of updating the audio for Early Access launch.

Full Game Pad Support

Not only do we have full game pad support, you can seamlessly switch between input devices (keyboard/mouse). Well done, Tom!


The game is what I call open beta and ready to start crawling before we walk. We are so excited about the early access program so we can have an open beta and get community involvement into the game and getting it on all those computers and fixing bugs and making our engine truly powerful and the game as strong as it can be.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No. The game is mostly done, there is just a bit more it needs to be worthy of release. We have some DLC planned and in development, but that will launch after Metacell: Genesis ARCADE is out of Early Access. We are currently planning for DLC to be the same price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We want to involve the community in whatever manner that will help us make this game as good as it can be.


We primarily want the community to help us with localization. We want our game to be accessible to all who want to play it, but as stated previously: this is way out of our wheelhouse. We need native speakers to help us fix our shoddily executed localization attempt. We used Google Translate for goodness sake, please help us! Hopefully the community will be gracious enough to assist in this regard so our ingame and storefront copy is properly translated.

Everything Else

We have been staring at this game for 10 years now. A pool of new players will have a fresh perspective that can provide valuable feedback. At the risk of being too broad, we’re open to suggestions on just about anything players feel would improve their experience.”

About This Game

Metacell: Genesis ARCADE is an arcade game with the match 3 mechanic. Inspired by those old-school arcade games I grew up with and I wanted to emulate that experience within our own game. The basic gist of Arcade mode is a score attack mechanic where you want to survive to level 100 with the highest score by fighting back a never ending spawn of game pieces by making matches of 3 or more before the board fills up or even worse you are killed by one of the traps that could spawn at any moment. There are some things to make it not so hopeless; like some cool pickups, bombs and even extra lives.

Summary Metacell: Genesis ARCADE is a sci-fi thriller that takes place in a distant future in which mankind has organized under a single galactic empire called the Imperium.

Having already mapped and expanded deep within their universe, the Imperium has turned their attention to what lies beyond, and they found it. They discovered the means to breach the walls of our verse and create a gateway to the other side, the Metaverse.

Once there the Holy Caste began their research into the newly discovered realm. Blinded by their eagerness for knowledge, they created an abomination known only as the Metacell. This monstrosity is a single-celled organism born from both meta and prime material, and mere moments after its creation it began to evolve and adapt at astronomical rates, escaping its containment and threatening the entirety of existence.

Now only one man and his crew have even the slightest chance to defeat the Metacell and save both of the verses.

Part 1 - Genesis The entry point into the saga this starts when the Imperium Palace gets word that the Genesis Project has gone terribly wrong and the Metacell has escaped and threatens the verses if not stopped. The protagonist High Paladin Dominic Moore and his crew are called in from their much needed vacation to put their lives on the line for what could be their last mission as they head to the Härkönen Abyss where Heaven’s Gate lies and enter the metaverse to defeat their foe.

A little bit about us, we are just a few friends that wanted to make something awesome, so that’s what we are doing.

We have been bootstrapping this project with no funding since day one (April 20, 2011) and have accomplished a ♥♥♥♥ ton and we continue to keep crushing it. The only thing that sucks is we have to budget our time on the project very carefully. We all have day jobs and families that take up the majority of our time. So development to say has been slow moving but forward movement none the less.
