Early Access Software

Get involved with this software as it develops.

Note: This Early Access software is not complete and may or may not change further. If you are not excited to use this software in its current state, then you should wait to see if it progresses further in development. Learn more

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“To get feedback from users and help us decide where to focus development time.”

Approximately how long will this software be in Early Access?

“We're aiming for a full release sometime in 2017.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Over the coming months we're going to be working on:
* Performance improvements (allowing larger designs)
* Export to FBX (update: done!)
* Take pictures and record videos of your designs
* Better file management (e.g. rename save files)
* Oculus Rift support (update: done!)”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version should already be useful and stable enough for everyday VR design work. Core features already implemented:
* Freehand and line/shape drawing tools
* Import 2D/360 images and 3D models
* Group, move, or delete any part of a sketch
* Autosave”

Will this software be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to gradually raise the price as we ship new features.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We'll be following the Steam store page closely, and talking directly with users as much as possible. Regular updates and videos will be posted on Steam for new features/fixes.”

Build Scenes Faster

Release: Build Scenes Faster
Over the past two weeks we made building scenes faster, added a home area and added support for SketchFab models via glTF.

Models now Have ‘Snapping’
At the beginning of January we added primitives and Poly so it was really easy to build a scene with models. Getting those models exactly how you wanted — like getting a plate to sit flat on a table — was tricky.

So I’m excited to announce that all models in Sketchbox now have snapping. It’s makes building scenes waaay faster. Models will now snap to the ground plane — so it’s easy to anchor and align objects. Models will also snap to each other, so you can build a house with primitives and get the rug and the dining room table to snap to the floor.

Snapping is difficult to get just right, and this is the first iteration — expect updates in February.

Support for glTF Import
glTF is (hopefully) going to be the JPEG of 3D and we’re excited to announce that you can now import glTFs into Sketchbox.

Sketchfab is arguably the largest library of quality 3D assets and now all Sketchfab models that can be downloaded, can be used in Sketchbox as glTFs!

Learn how to import 3D models into Sketchbox here.

Find Examples in the Home Area
You can now access example scenes from the home area, and load your saved sketches.

Tutorial… Now with Confetti!
As more and more people use Sketchbox, some of them who are new to VR, we knew it was time to improve our tutorial. And of course, there’s now confetti.

Release: Find the Models you Need

This week we focused on 3D models. We made it easier to find models and if your search fails, build your own model with primitives.

Find the models you want with Poly
You can now search Poly for exactly the model you want using a keyboard built into Sketchbox. Creating a scene has never been faster.

Create with Primitives
Our most requested feature of all time is finally here! You can now add primitives directly from the menu and stretch them however you want. Primitives are especially useful if you’re building environments or you’re having trouble finding exactly the model you want.

Manipulate Models with Control Points
All models in Sketchbox, including the models that you’ve imported can now be manipulated using control points that will be familiar to anyone that’s used a 3D modelling tool before. All models can be stretched on their X, Y or Z axis which makes it really easy to create variants of the same model.

About This Software

Sketchbox is the #1 design tool for AR/VR.

We created it specifically for designing applications/experiences and UI/UX ideas.

Go from idea to an ‘in-VR’ design in minutes. Import your files, build your scenes, and create a VR storyboard that everyone can understand. Finally you can design for AR & VR without using a game engine or engaging a developer.

Get clients and stakeholders comfortable with your plan. They’ll get a sense for what the finished experience will feel like. Stop waving your hands and using paper sketches to explain yourself. We intentionally chose a ‘sketch-like’ aesthetic so you spend less time on details, and more time on what matters.

With Sketchbox you can:
> CREATE VR STORYBOARDS to explain user flows.
> IMPORT ASSETS from Google Poly, or use your own images, 3D models and 360° images.
>> GROUP OBJECTS to create components that can be moved and duplicated. Perfect for UI components, like menus.
> EXPORT TO FBX. Easily share finished sketches on any device.
