Early Access Software

Get involved with this software as it develops.

Note: This Early Access software is not complete and may or may not change further. If you are not excited to use this software in its current state, then you should wait to see if it progresses further in development. Learn more

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“To get feedback from users and help us decide where to focus development time.”

Approximately how long will this software be in Early Access?

“We're aiming for a full release sometime in 2017.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Over the coming months we're going to be working on:
* Performance improvements (allowing larger designs)
* Export to FBX (update: done!)
* Take pictures and record videos of your designs
* Better file management (e.g. rename save files)
* Oculus Rift support (update: done!)”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version should already be useful and stable enough for everyday VR design work. Core features already implemented:
* Freehand and line/shape drawing tools
* Import 2D/360 images and 3D models
* Group, move, or delete any part of a sketch
* Autosave”

Will this software be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to gradually raise the price as we ship new features.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We'll be following the Steam store page closely, and talking directly with users as much as possible. Regular updates and videos will be posted on Steam for new features/fixes.”

Release: Text & Copy Between Scenes

Text Input
Definitely our most requested feature, you can now add text to any scene. Text will behave exactly like any other object, which means it can be snapped, resized and grouped.

Comfort Mode
For our users that are susceptible to motion sickness, we've added comfort mode, which applies an FOV limiting effect when moving around the scene, much like in Google Earth. It is off by default and can be turned on from settings.

Copy and Paste Between Scenes
You can now copy an object to the clipboard, and paste that object between scenes. It's really useful if you've added an object to a scene and want that object to appear in many other scenes. See the video below for more information.

Other Improvements
>Ability to move the scene while holding an object (in general most interactions are now possible while moving the scene, even drawing)
>Left/right handedness and comfort mode settings are saved between sessions
>Expanded keyboard to include punctuation and shift/caps functionality
>General performance/rendering improvements
>Lots of minor bug fixes 🐛

Release: Scale for Models

Over the last two weeks we focused on scale. And I’m excited to announce that you can now import models with the correct scale and see the dimensions of a model.

Import Models with Scale
When importing a model into Sketchbox (GLTF, OBJ or FBX) Sketchbox will read the model file, and import the model with whatever units were in the file (mm, cm, m, km, in or ft). Using ‘Model Settings’ you can change the units of any model.

Reset Scale & Position
The absolute size of the model (eg. 3m x 4m x 1m) is displayed in the ‘Model Settings’ panel. ‘Reset Position’ will move the model to the origin. ‘Reset Scale’ will reset the scale of the model (eg. 1x1x1)

Size Indicators
The absolute size of every model is now shown when you resize the model, or when you hover on one of the control points.

Unit Settings for Projects
Every project now has a unit setting, and can be switched between meters and feet.

About This Software

Sketchbox is the #1 design tool for AR/VR.

We created it specifically for designing applications/experiences and UI/UX ideas.

Go from idea to an ‘in-VR’ design in minutes. Import your files, build your scenes, and create a VR storyboard that everyone can understand. Finally you can design for AR & VR without using a game engine or engaging a developer.

Get clients and stakeholders comfortable with your plan. They’ll get a sense for what the finished experience will feel like. Stop waving your hands and using paper sketches to explain yourself. We intentionally chose a ‘sketch-like’ aesthetic so you spend less time on details, and more time on what matters.

With Sketchbox you can:
> CREATE VR STORYBOARDS to explain user flows.
> IMPORT ASSETS from Google Poly, or use your own images, 3D models and 360° images.
>> GROUP OBJECTS to create components that can be moved and duplicated. Perfect for UI components, like menus.
> EXPORT TO FBX. Easily share finished sketches on any device.
