What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Long story short: Vox-L is in Early Access because we want to add more features and get your feedback on what features you want to see.

The Early Access version comes with an in-game tablet computer (like an iPad) that has apps installed. Each app allows you to extend the functionality of Vox-L. We'll be adding more and more apps throughout the Early Access timeframe. We want to build a user community and to collaborate with the community about what apps they want to see in the game. We'll even be letting some members of the community develop their own apps in our developer Beta.

The end goal is to take Vox-L out of Early Access in about a year, when there is a large app eco-system, allowing players an infinite number of ways to customize their playing experience for themselves and their friends.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“It will be in Early Access for about a year, with frequent updates. We plan to take it out of early access in October 2017.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We'll be adding more apps throughout Early Access and adding features to the ones that are currently there.

In particular, we'll be adding more worlds to the world app. We would like to add about 100 new worlds between now and early 2017. We'll also add an app for saving and sharing your voxel worlds with other users.

Additionally, we'll be adding some of the following apps (and also trying to get players to tell us what kinds of apps they want to see):

* Gravity app - Let's you adjust gravity in the game
* Weapons app - Let's you equip and customize in-game tools and weapons
* Sports app - Let's you spawn and configure in-game sports goals (basketball goals, soccer goals, etc.). So you can invent your own virtual sports for up to 8 players.
* Music app - Let's you set the music in the game
* Camera app - Let's you take pictures in-game
* Player scale app -- Let's you change your size (become a giant or really tiny)
* Movie app - Let's you watch YouTube videos in game with your friends

Mainly, though, we're in Early Access because we want to involve players in the design process. There are a lot of apps we can add to the game. We want to see what you do with the existing apps and tell us what other apps you're dying to see.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The collection of apps that currently ships with Vox-L allows you to invite your friends to multi-player games, transform the terrain with voxels (kind of like Minecraft), and spawn physical objects in game (kind of like in Gary's Mod). Everything is synchronized in multiplayer, so you can collaboratively build your own creative play experiences. Make a basketball court and play basketball. Dig a hole and fill it up with a bunch of colored balls -- like at McDonalds. Load a massive forest world and play hide and seek in the dark with flashlights. All of these experiences are currently possible -- as are many more that we haven't thought of.

There is also an app that allows you to load new voxel worlds. There's a stadium world (where you can play sports). There's a forest world (great for hide and seek or capture the flag). Etc.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“It will probably cost more after Early Access. We plan to gradually raise the price as we ship new content and features.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We'll have a forum for discussion of upcoming apps, and for managing the developer beta.”

About This Game

Vox-L is not a game. It's a customizable virtual reality playground.

By default, Vox-L is just an infinite white terrain. There's nothing there. You can't do anything fun. Sounds boring, I know...

But here are some reasons we think you'll enjoy it.

Reason 1:

It has free multiplayer. You can invite your friends. (If you have troubles starting a multiplayer game, we have a forum topic where we are discussing the multiplayer feature. See the Basic Info section for a link to our forum.)

Reason 2:

It is customizable. With free in-game apps, you can transform your playground into whatever you want. Apps let you change the terrain, spawn toys, load dynamic content, launch mini-games, etc.

Reason 3:

We've already added several apps for you to customize your experience.

  • Builder app: Gives you tools to deform the voxel terrain by placing/removing blocks (like in Minecraft). Lets you spawn physical objects in the world.
  • Multiplayer app: Host a server and invite your friends. Or find and join a server. (NOTE: This feature is still in development. If it doesn't work for you, please post on our support forum.)
  • Worlds app: Choose from various pre-built worlds. We currently have 3 voxel worlds. We'll be adding over 100 more in early 2017.
  • Flashlight app: Turn your tablet into a flashlight. Control the color and brightness. It's surprisingly fun.
  • Sky app: Change the time of day, add fog, add clouds.

Reason 4:

We are adding new apps constantly. In fact, if you want to, you can make your own. (NOTE: If you want to develop apps for Vox-L, contact us to be part of our developer Beta. Anyone who knows JavaScript, HTML, and CSS can do it.)
