Why Early Access?

“NAL Is Alive is a large project as a whole, but is comprised of a vast array of smaller-scale games from a development span of over 13 years.

By releasing the game in Early Access, the games in the pack that have received more polish or are generally better are already there to be enjoyed. Older and less polished games are still available in forms identical to, or close to, their original releases, and can be updated and brought up to the standards of the other games incrementally.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“A ballpark figure would be around one year. This is a very vague estimate, and of course depends on how easily and smoothly games take new functionality, visual and performance upgrades etc. NAL Is Alive will not be released as a "complete" game until the entire package feels like one cohesive, enjoyable unit.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The main goal of the full version is to make every game in NAL Is Alive fun and worthwhile to play, even if not hours long, and the Launcher that bundles them all together a fully functioned wrapper that provides your statistics, game leaderboards, achievements, perhaps also extended information on the game and its original development, differences between the original and the NAL Is Alive version etc.

Also planned is for every game to be playable in 1080p at 60FPS and with either a keyboard and mouse or with a gamepad. And new games will be steadily added as they are developed - these will be games that aren't released commercially separately.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The first release of Early Access will contain every game planned for the final release, albeit in varying stages of playability - around half of them contain Steam Leaderboard compatibility and statistics linking with the Launcher, most of the rest are old versions or slightly modified versions, and around 10 are currently broken in some way (these games can still be played but will either behave incorrectly or error out after a while).”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“NAL Is Alive is likely to rise in price following its full launch, to reflect on the work being put into it. The price is unlikely to change until then.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community support will be very valuable to the project, since the sheer quantity of games means that there's a lot to test and a lot of things that can unexpectedly break. We'd also like to maximise the fun of each game by ensuring that their gameplay is balanced and varied, take ideas for tweaks, etc.”

NAL Is Alive is alive

An update for NAL Is Alive is now out, which fixes the issues that prohibited the Launcher from working as intended.

NAL Is Alive now also contains five more games:
  • Gossamer Girls: a low-resolution procedurally generated dungeon crawler where you harvest silk from spiders and hunt down upgrades to keep yourself alive
  • Britskrieg: take control of four plucky Britons in a bid to take over the world at the behest of the Queen
  • Ink Idiom: the full version of the paid game, solve over 300 visual puzzles that lead to common idioms, sayings and turns of phrase
  • Rev%lver: take control of a gun with a weird habit of wasting ammunition if you answer percentage-based trivia questions too inaccurately
  • Jasmine Laslo – Switch U On: fall for an MLM music streaming service which only has one song available – the owner’s daughter’s – generating a million plays for her incessantly terrible song

The highscores are currently misbehaving, but I wanted to get a version out that AT LEAST makes the compilation work to a fundamental degree again.

I believe an apology is owed, as well. For the time NAL Is Alive took for me to create, it didn’t exactly set the world on fire (infact it lost us money through the fact I spent time on it and not on more fruitful things) so I definitely wasn’t enthusiastic to continue working on it. Unfortunately, working on it becomes a little more pressing when it decides it’s just going to up and die.

Fixing it has been exacerbated by a number of issues – the launcher’s file relies on a specific extension to actually run the games of NAL Is Alive, and for some reason, versions of GameMaker released since I last worked on NIA shot the extension dead. It is only thanks to the extremely helpful YellowAfterlife, and his extension that I found could swap it out without a world of hassle, for me being able to get the launcher working again THIS soon. (The error that broke the launcher in the first place was not the result of any update and I genuinely have no idea why it suddenly turned from “not existing” into “broadly problematic”.)

So I’m really sorry it’s taken this long. I’m writing this at 2:15am on a Saturday night (well, Sunday morning) resuscitating this dumb compilation, and I hope the few of you that care about it are now able to play it, enjoy it, and play around with it.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your patience, I don’t deserve any of you. If this kind of error ever happens again I’m going to hit it with a big stick and possibly cry or something.

About This Game

Over 13 years, and over 130 games. All made by one hobbyist-turned-full-time developer. And now, for the first time, available in one cohesive package in the form of NAL Is Alive!

NAL Is Alive is a compendium containing everything by NAL, released under the NALGames pseudonym between 2003 and today, wrapped up in a launcher that also universally tracks your statistics and highscores for each game*, the latter being compared against the world in Steam-exclusive online leaderboards*.

Containing the good - Maddening Relapse 2! Hi Me Ro Me! Innoquous 4! Ne Touchez Pas! Prisnhax! Frankenfirearm! Lab Wagon!

And the bad - Aardvark Cwm! Gemocide! Clickfire!

...and almost everything inbetween! Ever wanted to work it on a pogo stick? SohoPogoHo hears you! Fancy going around peeing on people? Signal Failure! You can assume the role of a redhead killing your opposers of the world in Infidels, or become a little robot fixing the big robot it resides in with Titan Tighten.

Need a rhythm game fix while also improving your touch typing proficiency? Bullet Hills sees you typing to the music! Need a music game that has instead has no rhythm? Melodika gets you to suck a stream of icons into a recepticle to any track of your choosing! Need to inject yourself to help forget the nightmarous legion of female stalkers planning on kissing you to death? Yeah, that's in here too with Overly Attracted Stalkers. So's the one where you're a dog in a ball unloading clips of everything from water pistols to rocket shotguns at mutant bags of blood - Lyssandra and the Amplegores. And the one where you get to play an interactive advert for a fictional Japanese dish cleaner while a man touts its superior viscosity to you, Japanese Infomercial.

All of these and more, being taken through an ongoing process to bring them up to spec* - dropping the MIDI music from the really old stuff in favour of more listenable MP3s, knocking every game's resolution and FPS up to 1080p/60 (potentially again up to 4K in the future), improving their gameplay and their graphics, adding the aforementioned Steam leaderboards... you name it.

It's presented in a somewhat light-hearted way, and many of the games are pretty silly, but this pack truly does represent a huge chunk of my life - everything I made independently from being an 11 year old kid that had to download Game Maker 5.0 onto a school computer and bring it home on 3.5" floppy discs thanks to the speed of my home internet, to a currently 25 year old making games and other stuff full-time.

*Please note: not all games will support the update features during NAL Is Alive's Early Access development. As of writing, approx 80 games contain Steam Leaderboards, and approx 40 are completely upscaled to 1080p/60.
