As soon as you find your first musical instrument you can play it to bring a small pocket of the world back to life. Use your instrument to make platforms move, enemies move, and open up new traversal options.

When you begin your music is quiet  and simple, as you solve more puzzles the world starts to play and dance along with the music and add more of its own layers to the songs.
