Fish Tank Sim is expected to remain in Early Access for approximately 12–24 months, depending on development progress, community feedback, and the scope of added systems. Considering it's currently being developed by a single developer.

The full version is planned to expand on the current experience with deeper progression. This may include additional tanks, more fish with unique traits, expanded decoration and upgrade systems, new environments, visual customization options, and optional side activities such as fishing. The Early Access version offers a fully playable core experience. Players can manage multiple fish tanks, feed fish, clean tanks through interactive mechanics, grow and sell fish to earn money, unlock new tanks and fish through leveling, purchase tank upgrades such as filters and aerators, trade large orders using the trade menu, and a experience a day/night cycle with ambient forest sounds.

Fish Tank Simulator is expected to increase slightly in price after leaving Early Access, reflecting the addition of new content and systems.
