In City N, the most powerful earthquake in history struck. All the residents lost their minds. Meanwhile, plants and household appliances gained consciousness! Now they survive in the ruined city, gradually turning the wreckage into a thriving colony.

What kind of game is this

This is a colony simulator with a focus on cooperative play. You have a main base — a permanent hub that you develop between expeditions. From the base, you embark on raids into city districts: missions last roughly 1–1.5 hours and end either with the successful construction of an outpost or a forced retreat. Successful expeditions provide resources, upgrades, and new opportunities for your base.

                                                             

How it plays

Two species live in the settlement at the same time, and each player controls their own. You switch between tasks in real time: construction, gathering, repair, scouting, and defense. Roles are not fixed — in every mission, and even during a single expedition, responsibilities constantly shift.

Plants and robots — two ways of surviving

  • Robots are sturdy and precise, excelling at heavy labor and frontline tasks, but they break in the rain and cannot regenerate. Any damage requires repairs at a special station.

  • Plants regenerate naturally and are strengthened by water, but are weaker in direct confrontation. They sense humidity and spores, which helps in scouting and adapting to the environment.

These and many other differences create dynamic gameplay: sometimes it’s better to send a “tank” robot to the front, sometimes a group of plants for long-term work in wet areas. But these are not rigid classes — players constantly shift priorities and combine abilities.

Dangers and challenges

The greatest threat is the unknown. In City N, anything can happen: mutated humans, unusually intelligent animals, animated objects. The closer you get to the epicenter, the stranger the environment becomes. Unpredictable weather, deadly anomalies, hybrid creatures… everything keeps players on their toes.

Progression and exploration

With each outpost, your control expands: new routes, technologies, and resources become available. The base develops between missions — upgrades affect the next expedition, granting access to new structures, repair modules, and sensors.

Who the game is for

Take Root is best experienced cooperatively with two players: shared planning, synchronized actions, and role-switching make the gameplay chaotic and rich. A single-player mode is available, but the game is balanced for two.
