About This Content

■E231 Series (Suburban Type)

The E231 Series debuted in 2003 as the standard model following the 209 Series and E217 Series. Featuring a completely redesigned control system through extensive adoption of information technology, it unified the basic specifications for commuter and suburban types while employing a wider body to alleviate crowding. The introduction of the Train Information Management System (TIMS) significantly reduced wiring, optimized air conditioning through fully automatic control, and automated pre-departure inspections, resulting in a maintenance-free system.

The E231 Series (Suburban Type) was designed for medium-distance trains and is a Suburban-Type train with semi-cross seating and toilets installed in multiple locations throughout the train. It was introduced sequentially on various lines, such as the Utsunomiya Line, Takasaki Line, and Tōkaidō Line, replacing the 113, 115, and 211 Series trains that had been in operation since the Japanese National Railways era. Initially, no Green Cars were attached, but with the start of Green Car service on the Utsunomiya Line, Takasaki Line, and Shonan-Shinjuku Line in 2004, two double-decker Green Cars were attached. In 2015, the Ueno-Tōkyō Line also opened, and the trains now operate over a wide area, including Utsunomiya, Maebashi, Ito, and Numazu. Depending on the train, you may also see 15-car formations coupled with E233 Series trains.

It has been more than 20 years since the E231 Series (Suburban Type) debuted, and the equipment in the cars is being updated, but the cars that have not been updated are popular with fans because they make a unique motor sound when accelerating.

This DLC reproduces the E231 Series (Suburban Type) cars that have not been updated. Please enjoy driving the E231 Series with its distinctive motor sound.
