By hook or by crook, build your wealth and influence and you'll gain the attention of both the greater and lesser rulers of the land and the people hoping to live a better life.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst

Prepare carefully for forays into the wilderness as hunger, sickness, and the climate can have disastrous effects on your expedition. Be sure to find ways to test your mettle before diving too deep and finding yourself unprepared for combat. There's no shame in realizing that retreat is your best option, especially if you can realize it early enough.

Carve out a piece of land and have your say

The land is rich in resources and is thoroughly spoken for by various rulers' claims. Whether through military might or the grant of a local lord, you can establish your own settlement and help your settlers grow their village into a formidable city. Settlers will come and join promising towns, bringing their labor and economic activity. And with more people comes more needs for housing, varied food production, entertainment, and defense.

Become the hand that tips the scales

The established cities and their rulers have their own motivations. As you gain notoriety, whether as an accomplished guild member, infamous mercenary, or champion of the people, these rulers will be interested in your help to further their goals. Decide whether their cause is worthwhile to pursue, or burn it all down and start over.
