What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We decided to launch Freedom & Glory in Early Access in order to:

Involve our community of players early, especially those passionate about history and narrative adventures, so they can directly influence the game’s development (storylines, characters, naval mechanics).

Gather real feedback on the first playable versions — this will help us improve balance, usability, the tutorial, and naval combat mechanics before the full release.

Adjust content and development pace according to player expectations (e.g., procedurally generated quests, crew and ship customization, island economy systems) — all of which are currently in development.

Ensure transparency with the community: Early Access demonstrates that the game is actively being developed while offering players early access for free and allowing us to collect feedback before the final version.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect Freedom & Glory to remain in Early Access for around 6 months.
During this period, our main goals are to:

Finalize core systems (tutorial, autosave, interface, full English translation).

Add planned narrative content (new quests, characters, and historical story chapters).

Expand naval and customization mechanics (ship, crew, island economy).

Optimize performance and improve visuals.

At the end of this period, we plan to launch the full version on Steam with all promised features included.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Freedom & Glory is planned to expand on the Early Access foundation with more content, refined systems, and improved visuals. It will feature a deeper naval battle system, enhanced ship and crew customization, and a more developed island economy with procedurally generated adventures.

Additional narrative chapters, new characters, and greater player choice will further shape the story, while performance and visuals will continue to be optimized. The goal is to evolve from a playable introduction into a rich, fully realized historical adventure shaped by community feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“- A playable version (v0.1.4) offering 10–15 minutes of gameplay, with quests and 5 secondary characters.

- A branching narrative where player choices affect progress.

- Basic features such as naming your character and ship (introduced in v0.1.5) and an improved tutorial.

- The beginning of an autosave system (v0.1.5).

Planned for the future:
- Full naval battle system, balancing, crew tasks and progression (~20% complete).

- Island economy system, procedurally generated adventures, and large-scale quests (~10–50% progress).

- Customizable UI, ship and crew customization (~30% progress).

- Full English translation (currently at 0%).

- Additional large narrative chapters, more impactful choices, expanded historical universe.

- Major visual improvements (characters, island, ships) and optimization.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“During Early Access, Freedom & Glory will be completely free (0 €).
This allows as many players as possible to try the game, provide feedback, and participate in its development.

The final version on Steam will be paid, with the price announced before official release.
Players who joined during the free Early Access period will of course keep the game permanently in their library.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will rely on several mechanisms:
- A dedicated channel (Discord, forum, or similar) where players can report bugs, suggest balance changes, or propose quest/story ideas.

- Quarterly surveys to help prioritize new features (e.g., “Which naval mechanic should we improve first?”).

- Regular Dev Logs (every 4–6 weeks) to share the current state of the game, upcoming goals, and request feedback on specific topics (UI, combat system, narrative).

- Internal beta builds for volunteer testers to try new features before they are added to the main branch.

- Prioritizing bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements based on community input.

- Clear patch notes after every major update, explaining what has been fixed, added, and what’s planned next.

With this iterative approach, we aim to create not only a fun experience, but also a game that truly reflects community feedback.”

About This Game

Freedom & Glory aims to combine adventure, multiple choices, and historical storytelling:
Rather than following a textbook script, Freedom & Glory presents history as a dynamic, branching experience.

The player takes on the role of a ship captain navigating through decisive historical moments, managing both crew and moral choices.

🛠️ Mechanics & Content

  • Narrative choices: multiple paths available depending on the player’s decisions.

  • Quests and progression: version 0.1.4, as mentioned by the developers, includes 10–15 minutes of gameplay, 6 quests, and 3 secondary characters. A three-part story with multiple possible paths.

  • Features: auto-save system, customization (character/ship name), improved tutorial are listed in version 0.1.5.

  • Development state: the historical context and environment (ship, island, crew) are still under visual/technical development.

📌 Positioning & Ambition

The game positions itself as “a unique interactive experience that blends: a deep narrative RPG where every dialogue and choice impacts your …” according to its Ulule page.

The studio indicates its intention to go beyond traditional “edutainment”: a game that not only informs but truly immerses players in history.

✅ Strengths

  • The rich narrative and multiple branching choices provide strong replayability (different paths depending on decisions).

  • The historical theme is quite rare in indie narrative games, which makes it stand out.

  • Being developed by a French independent studio (Pillow Interactive) adds a handcrafted, authentic dimension.
