What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Any shoot'em up requires a ton of feedback and refinement to be an actually enjoyable experience. I expect to improve existing content and develop full version of the game building upon such feedback.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Considering already performed work, I hope to get to full version within a year”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Launch version contains 5 levels, final edition is expected to have around 10 (maybe less if earlier levels are to grow in scope, maybe more if storyline will demand), plus balance, gameplay and content revisions according to feedback or internal testing. New levels are planned to feature similar approach to those existing - gradual shift of art assets and enemy roster for each following level, with unique boss encounter at the end. Some new features are also worked on and planned to be implemented: additional powerups, in-level secrets and arena-like encounters”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game provides 5 levels, each with a final boss and a set of enemies, 4 weapon types, 2 characters to choose from, weapon powerup system, player lives system, transitional scenes and two story cutscenes with animated and static segments. Each level is short (1 to 3 minutes before the boss) but can require multiple attempts to beat. Majority of main systems are already implemented (such as local highscore, level transitions, input, weapons, powerup framework etc.) and majority of programming effort is to be spent on creating bullet and enemy patterns, creation of boss behaviour, and unique level threats. Existing artstyle and quality is reflective of planned with caveat of certain specific assets might be reworked if continuity or quality assessment calls for it.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No, the game is expected to maintain its pricing.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I expect to get some tasty user feedback via Steam Forums and other means to build a better game upon it”

About This Game

Compact Plasma Gears is a retro shoot'em up inspired by the NES-era classics. Pick a character to fight through ten levels, beat equal number of bosses and a significantly higher quantity of regular enemies.

The Preamble

An archaeological discovery in an independent mining system piques the interest of special services of Five Galaxies. Space Federation of the Second Galaxy rushes in to secure the finding and sends the Third External fleet under the ever unscrupulous command of Admiral Tai'nor Farth - though it seems local pirates also caught up the smell of profit, and if they did - so did everyone else.

What to expect from the game?

  • Pick up weapons to your liking (and try to keep them if you can avoid those space rocks)

  • Use score acquisition to fuel up your superweapon

  • Select a character to play as - the grumpy yet reliable chainsmoker Cap, or the volatile femme fatale Lady

  • Execute a potentially legal mission on behalf of Space Federation's Third External Fleet

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

While the game overall presents minimal violence or horror elements, it contains scenes of combat with biomechanical entities and organic monsters, and destruction of piloted spacecraft implies potential death of pilots or crews. A character smoking pipe is a key character, a character hanging out with a glass of wine is also present.
