About This Game

"You Don't Belong Here" is an indie Metroidvania platformer that blends a 2D protagonist with a richly detailed 3D world in an experimental experience, offering players a unique journey through themes of identity, belonging, and exploration. Players embark on a multi-section narrative featuring progressively complex gameplay, innovative mechanics, and a visually striking mix of retro pixel art and modern graphics, with appearances of many different game art styles throughout.

Story and Progression

Players control a 2D character who mysteriously glitches into a nihilistic 3D world and must navigate environments that challenge both their abilities and their sense of self. The narrative unfolds across diverse levels—from nostalgic 8-bit platformer sections to realistic 3D environments—with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Along the journey, players encounter non-player characters (NPCs) that provide hints, lore, and atmospheric world-building, as well as a variety of enemies that make each environment feel alive.

Gameplay Features

Genre: Exploration-driven action-platformer inspired by the Metroidvania genre, featuring backtracking, puzzle-solving, and skill progression.

  • Real-time combat enhanced with visually engaging glitch effects

  • Unique axis progression: new abilities and upgrades tied to movement along the X, Y, and Z axes (double jump, weapon throw, dash, etc.), allowing dynamic traversal and varied gameplay styles

  • Glitch mechanics: intentional glitches serve as environmental storytelling tools and function as save/heal points, adding a layer of meta-commentary

  • Platforming challenges and exploration: hidden areas, optional paths, and collectibles (coins) reward observant players and encourage replayability

  • Puzzle elements: challenges that require unlocking new abilities or interpreting environmental clues, balanced for both casual and advanced players

  • Character Upgrades: different abilities, ranging from offensive skills (like "Spin" attack) to traversal powers (dash, flip), each altering interactions with the world

  • Soundtrack and Audio: a dynamic in-game soundtrack and responsive sound design enhance the emotional atmosphere and immersion of every stage

Playtime and Modes

Estimated playtime is 90–120 minutes for the main storyline, with additional time required to discover hidden areas, interact with NPCs, and collect all upgrades.

The game offers a single-player experience focused on narrative exploration, skill progression, and replay value through multiple paths and secrets.

"You Don't Belong Here" delivers a visually rich, experimental, and emotionally driven platformer—perfect for players seeking thoughtful storytelling and inventive gameplay in a compact, 2-hour adventure.
