What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Pluto is in active development. We’re looking for as much input as we can get from you and anyone else who uses VR to help us create the high-quality, remote communications service we all need.”

Approximately how long will this software be in Early Access?

“We have a long journey ahead of us, and expect that it will be years before we are fully out of early access.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Pluto will include the updates and features that were developed during Early Access. We are looking for feedback from you to help guide our development and prioritize service improvements.

Areas we are working on:
  • Easier connection, including more ways to find and add contacts and better notifications around missed connections.
  • More sharing. Additional ways to share files, experiences, screenshots, and more.
  • Better human representation. We are iterating on how to better capture and show your attributes to others.
  • Support for other platforms and operating systems.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

  • For a list of our currently implemented features, please refer to the "About This Software" section below
  • As one of the first 3D overlay applications, there are still performance issues that sometimes occur when opening and closing the dashboard and switching between applications.
  • Overlays in SteamVR don’t currently support depth, and thus Pluto avatars render on top of other applications regardless of position. To deal with this current state, we’ve added opacity options and the ability to fully hide other avatars.
  • While Pluto runs alongside other apps, it does not enable real-time sharing of what you are seeing with others. You can share a screenshot, but you can’t yet share a view into the application you are running with others.

Will this software be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Pluto is a free service by design. As we continue development, we may explore new options to help us pay the bills and keep the lights on. We aren’t sure exactly what those options could be yet, but we’re committed to keeping our users informed. We’re on a mission to make Pluto a viable remote communication solution for as many people as possible.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Participation on our Steam community hub, our Discord channel, events and activities on the Pluto service, and the Pluto Customer Advisors program for those interested in trying out the latest and the breakiest versions of Pluto.”

New Features: Names, Contacts, Account Tools

Hey, everyone! We’re getting a lot of excellent feedback on Pluto—thank you so much! Based on your comments, we’ve made the following changes to the service. Maybe you’ve noticed them? If not, please take a minute and check them out today.

Let us know here or at support@plutovr.com if you have any blocking issues preventing you from enjoying your Pluto conversations.

Your Name
It’s time to get real! Now you can use your real name or something close to it as your display name. This makes it easier for your friends to find you in the Contacts directory.

Account Info
Quickly access your account details and reset your password or change your name on the new Pluto Account Info page.

Connect with Google Contacts
New feature: Import your Google contacts. Go to Add Contacts in Pluto and select "Sign in with Google" to see if any of your existing contacts already have Pluto accounts. If they do, they'll show up at the top of the list. If not, you can invite them here.

Once you sign in with Google when adding contacts, we'll notify you if any of your Google contacts later create a Pluto account, too! That way you can connect when you are both using VR, regardless of your physical location.

Better Contact Searching
Since you use Pluto with people you know, finding your contacts is essential to using and enjoying our service. Previously, you could only search by username and email, but now you can search by display name, too. Even if you’re not sure of the exact name or spelling, Pluto will show you partial matches for the name you’re trying to find (email search still requires exact string).

Keep the feedback coming!
Please share your thoughts with us anytime. We're interested in discovering more ways we can help you manage your Pluto account, use the service, and find your friends who are using VR!

About This Software

Pluto is creating a new way for humanity to connect from anywhere in the world. Today’s communication technologies (phone, text, video chat) don’t provide the sense of face-to-face presence and shared understanding that comes from being able to see each other’s reactions and body language in real time.

With Pluto, you can call and chat with friends while in any SteamVR application. Stay connected while using individual or multi-person apps.

Spend time with trusted friends and contacts even when you’re not in the same physical (or virtual) location. Download the app, create your own contacts list on Pluto, and stay connected to the people you care about who use VR.

  • Call and chat with existing contacts in VR
  • Stay connected while using individual or multi-person apps
  • Get into multiplayer games together or start at the same time
  • Talk with friends during loading screens and other key moments
  • Make art while connected to other people and share your Tilt Brush sketches (Requires Tilt Brush)
  • Access your contacts list and make connections through the Pluto Dashboard Overlay
