About This Game

What is a "Trick-Taking Game"?

A trick-taking game is a competitive card game where players take turns playing cards from their hands.

Classic examples using standard playing cards include Spades, Hearts, and Napoleon. In recent years, titles like The Crew, Cat in the Box, and The Fox in the Forest have gained popularity, and trick-taking continues to be a popular genre in tabletop gaming with new releases appearing regularly.

The unique rules may seem a bit daunting at first, but once you learn the basics, you can enjoy a simple yet deeply strategic experience.

Worried about learning the rules?

The game includes comprehensive tutorials and categorizes games by difficulty: "Casual," "Strategic," and "Expert." This progressive structure helps you ease into trick-taking at your own pace, so there's no need to worry.

What is Trick-Taking Rogue?

Trick-Taking Rogue combines traditional trick-taking games with roguelike elements.

Trick-taking games are fun, but most are designed for multiplayer. As a solo experience, they can lack the sense of progression and replayability that roguelikes offer. To address this, we've added roguelike elements, allowing you to purchase and upgrade skills at shops.

New skills unlock progressively as you clear each game.

Included Games

Trick-Taking Rogue includes the following 9 games:

  • Whist (A simple, timeless classic dating back centuries)

  • Sueca (Whist with added card points)

  • Briscola (Three-card hands, no need to follow suit)

  • Oh Hell (A bidding game where you predict the number of tricks you'll win)

  • Schnapsen (A strategic two-player game)

  • Tute Gana Pierde (Each trick demands a choice: win it or lose it)

  • Spades (Probably the most well-known trick-taking game in this collection)

  • Belote (A strategic game featuring trump bidding)

  • Trick Poker (An original game combining trick-taking with poker hands)

Recommended For

  • If you enjoy trick-taking games.

  • If you enjoy Mahjong. Trick-taking offers gameplay similar to "Mahjong stripped down to pure opponent-reading."

  • If you enjoy roguelikes. The "trick-taking × roguelike" genre is not very common, so it may offer a new experience.

  • If you love board games but haven't tried trick-taking. Traditional trick-taking may seem less flashy than modern board games, but you may find more depth than you'd expect. We recommend Schnapsen in particular—its "closing the stock" mechanic adds interesting strategic depth. It's a solid two-player game even outside of this title.

  • If you enjoy poker. We've included Trick Poker, an original trick-taking game with poker elements.

  • If you regularly play traditional trick-taking games. While free browser-based and mobile trick-taking games are available, Trick-Taking Rogue prioritizes tempo. We've focused especially on "fast, stress-free gameplay," so please give it a try.

  • If you enjoy solitaire-style games. While trick-taking games are traditionally designed for human opponents, this title focuses on computer opponents, allowing you to enjoy it as a form of solitaire.

Please Note

  • There is no deck-building element. As a roguelike, it's closer to inventory-management-focused games like the original Rogue.

  • There is no story element. This game has no narrative or atmospheric elements—it's purely a card game with roguelike elements added. Please be aware of this.
