By the late 21st century, as hopes for Earth’s bright future faded, humanity launched the Great Exodus — a program to build spaceships for the best people to search for new life elsewhere. The ships were initially intended for all, but the elite were the first to depart, leaving others behind on a dying Earth, waiting for their turn. All remaining resources were dedicated to this, while other assets were reassessed, repurposed, or scrapped.

The audit was simple: prove you're still useful, or be scrapped.
