What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“This is a tower defense game, and at the end of this month it'll be fully playable from start to finish with a meaningful amount of content already in the box. That's a launch I'm proud of, but the genre sets a high bar. Players come into a tower defense game expecting a deep well of stages, waves, creatures, and progression to chew through across many runs, and that kind of breadth takes time to build well.

I'm choosing Early Access because I'd rather build that breadth openly with players than disappear for a year and hope I made the right calls. Launching now lets me ship the solid core that's ready, gather real feedback on what lands and what doesn't, and steadily expand the game; new stages, new enemies, new friend creatures, and new skill tree branches; until there's enough content to keep players engaged for hundreds of hours.

If you jump in during Early Access, you're not just buying a game, you're helping shape what it grows into. Bug reports, balance feedback, and feature requests from the community will directly inform what I build next.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“A year to year and a half.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access build is a complete tower defense experience. You can play start-to-finish, summon a flock of friends to defend the chicken coop, climb escalating waves, and unlock progression across the skill tree. The full release will significantly expand on that foundation in every direction:
- More stages: additional environments to defend, each with their own layouts, hazards, and aesthetics.
- Deeper wave progression: late-game content with new enemy types, mini-bosses, and encounters that push the strategy past what the core loop demands today.
- A broader roster: additional friend creatures with unique special abilities, and new enemies that demand different defensive approaches.
- Expanded meta-progression: more skill tree branches and persistent unlocks that meaningfully change how subsequent runs play out.
- Polish and balance: extensive tuning informed by community feedback, alongside quality-of-life features and content that rounds out the experience.

The Early Access build is the seed of what the game will be. The full release is that seed grown into something that can hold a player's attention across many runs and many sessions. ”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access build is a complete, end-to-end playable tower defense game, not a tech demo or a vertical slice. You can customize your chicken, pick a stage, choose a starting friend, and play through every wave the build ships with.

The core loop is fully fleshed out: summon friend creatures with their own attacks and special abilities, defend the chicken coop against escalating waves of enemies, collect eggs and corn during runs, and spend them on a persistent skill tree between runs to permanently change how future attempts play out. Each creature has a five-tier in-run upgrade ladder, and deeper meta-progression unlocks gate behind encountering each enemy at least once, so the tree opens up as you push further into the game.

All the major UX layers are in place: full controller and support, a settings menu with audio controls, lock-on targeting, a built-in tutorial flow for new players, Steam achievements, and Steam Cloud saves.

What you should expect during Early Access: a tight core experience that's polished and worth playing today, paired with active development on top of it. Some balance numbers will keep being tuned based on player feedback, the content runway will keep growing, and a few mechanics may evolve as the community weighs in.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We're not planning on changing the price when we leave early access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community will have a direct hand in shaping where the game goes during Early Access. Player feedback drives my prioritization on new stages, enemy types, balance passes, and quality-of-life features; when something lands well I lean into it, and when something doesn't I rework it rather than leaving rough edges in the 1.0 build. The roadmap stays flexible enough to respond to what players actually want.

Communication happens across three channels:
- Steam: regular announcement posts on the store page for each major patch and content drop, including patch notes and a look at what's coming next.
- YouTube: devlogs covering bigger features, design decisions, and behind-the-scenes development progress.
- Discord: the most direct line. Bug reports, balance feedback, feature requests, and casual conversation with the community. This is where I'll be most active, and where ideas tend to take shape before they hit the roadmap.”

About This Game

Chicken TD is a tower defense game where the main goal is to protect your chicken coop from wave after wave of oncoming creatures. Featuring a combination of traditional tower defense strategy and souls like combat, you are able to summon creatures around the map to hold off the invaders, while you yourself are also fighting with the weapon of your choice to keep the baddies away.

As the wave number gets higher, so do your forces, so be smart about which friends you choose to fight alongside you. As you defeat enemies, you can upgrade your forces with the currency you collect to add even more strategic complexity and allow you to get further.

Spend meta progression currency to give each type of friend their own special power, adding even more customizability. Speaking of customization, take on quests to get new hats and color combinations making your chicken the coolest looking clucker around.
