Reviews

“It's a terrible situation and it's great. For a free browser game, the possibilities on offer are genuinely pretty impressive. How you choose to (try to) prevent the Nazis' rise to power is up to you. Do you channel every last Reichsmark into your associated paramilitary wing, the Reichsbanner? Do you go all-in on winning elections (and if you do, which voters do you target and how)? Do you try to bury the hatchet with the Communist Party and present a united front against fascism? Or the reverse: Do you say the far-left is just as much a threat as the far-right and try to take everyone on at once?”

About This Game

Can you stop the rise of fascism in Germany?

Social Democracy: An Alternate History is a political simulation/card game where you play as the Social Democratic Party of Germany between the years 1928 and 1934, and try to stop the NSDAP from taking power. Guide the party through elections, parliamentary politics, and internal party affairs. Deal with the Great Depression and the spiraling political violence that characterized the late Weimar Republic.

Features:

  • Dozens of cards representing party and government actions, and over 70 historical and alternate-historical events.

  • A multitude of different paths to save the republic: will you work with the Communists or the Center? Will you adopt a radical economic plan, fund welfare, or work to resolve the indemnities from the Treaty of Versailles? If all else fails, there is always militant action, but your paramilitaries may be too weak and demoralized.

  • Keep track of unemployment, inflation, support for the Republic, and the effects these have on party support from six different demographics.

  • Public domain images and music from the Weimar Republic.

  • A reference list of books and articles cited in making the game.

  • Each playthrough is an hour or less. Refine your strategy to find an optimal path through the crisis.
