The whole game is set in Ancient East Asia where all characters lives in a world full of (potentially superhuman) martial artists, basically eastern fantasy.
These Kung-Fu masters fight against each other for various reasons through out the game. Learning martial art techniques and using them to fight constitutes majority of the gameplay.
There are certain fictional martial art techniques that requires self-harm to learn/practice, some are even suicidal by design in exchange for huge damage, most likely to sacrifice oneself in order to save others.
When a character's health reduced to 0, the character will become "dying" and might end up "dead" and leave the game world forever if not helped in time.
There are no visual representation of blood, only a de-buff state "bleeding" and corresponding icon.
Some characters might occasionally curse to reflect their (likely negative) personality.
