Telecom Tycoon is a single player business simulation game (tycoon game), where you build up mobile networks (cellular networks). Similarly to other games in this genre, it focuses on a specific industry and is about building up a company in this industry.

The game starts in the 1992 and you as the player will get to know several generations of mobile technology. You control a mobile network operator, in addition there will be an adjustable number of AI controlled competitors.

During the course of a playthrough, licences will be awarded for the newest generation of mobile technology. This can happen e.g. by way of an auction. These licence auctions have a significant effect on the course of the game.

The game generates a random map with cities and villages when starting the game, similarly to other games in the genre. You can then build base stations on this map. These stations send out mobile signals and allow you to improve their network and the scattered population to use the same. You and your AI competitors start the main game with the same technology level: 2G (GSM). Additionally, you can set your conditions (e.g., pricing).

The simulated population will then start signing up to the different operators. Most relevant factors will be network quality and pricing. You will receive money from the subscribers on a regular basis. However, you must also pay for the maintenance of the network.

You will experience:

  • Building mobile networks, starting from the basics in the 1990s, while encountering some of the challenges that come with it.
  • The decision making on how much to bid for licences – witnessing and reliving the real-life licence auctions.
  • The changing mobile market and the technology over the decades.

While similar to games in the genre, there can - and usually will - be competition on most relevant parts of the world.

The main game will cover the years from 1992 to 2009. The tutorial is set in the 1980s.

When concluding a playthrough in 2009, you will get a score, based on the value of the company, difficulty and bonus goals. Playing beyond this date is possible, but will not change the score any further.
