Hopeless Sea begins in the late stages of a climatic apocalypse—triggered by the domino effect of global warming, which caused a sudden and drastic rise in global temperatures, leading to the massive melting of polar ice caps. By the mid-21st century, nearly all polar ice had vanished, resulting in a global sea level rise of over 50 meters. This rendered 90% of the world’s coastal megacities uninhabitable.
