What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Over the past few years I've implemented most of the mechanics and added content to a state you can play through the game, however there is still work to be done on filling placeholder content along with adding more content, a level of balancing and polish, and potential changes to how some mechanics are implemented (e.g. ways you can order construction) which mean I don't consider it ready as a "full release". I went with Early Access so people who are interested in the concept have something they can enjoy and if they want give feedback to in the Steam discussions, while people who want to wait for the game to have more content and be more polished can follow along.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The target is that it should hopefully only be in Early Access for about roughly 3 or 4 months, however the more important focus is on getting the game balanced and polished, and filled out with content, so if that is done sooner or later then it will change the timeline to full release, and making this solo means changes to personal circumstances will have a large effect (e.g. ongoing pain issues). Announcements on the change-over to full release will be posted ahead of time both on Steam and on the linked social media.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The plan is that the full release version will be once the balance and polish steps are mostly done. It is also much more likely that saves and planets will break between updates as I plan to try and update regularly during early access. Placeholder content (e.g. certain event popups that exist but have a placeholder effect or choices) is planned to be filled in.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Most mechanics have been implemented, but not polished. Fore example some parts of text have keys in place of full text. Planet generation, production and consumption, characters, conflicts, event popups, have been implemented mechanically with content, though some content for each is placeholder subject to change, and I want to add more content (e.g. more actions characters can do, more events to respond to). User modification elements like custom images and planet data (e.g. production items) have been partially but not fully implemented and the way they are implemented is subject to change.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The current plan is that there will be a small price increase when the game is near to full release, however this is not set in stone so discussion is welcome. Any price change will be announced both on Steam and the linked social media beforehand.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The Planetary Governor community section has a "discussions" tab which has been set up for both discussions about the game and a bug report subsection. There is an open test option in the Steam Betas feature which I plan to use so players who opt-in to can try changes (that might be save incompatible) earlier (Steam betas can always be opt-ed-out too). Player feedback here will be used to help balance and polish the game, and make changes to content, as well as for potential suggestion of new content. Important updates will be posted in Steam announcements and on the linked social media.”

About This Game

The Empire has appointed you as Planetary Governor, you have de jure authority to rule as you see fit provided you send the required tribute and keep the planet loyal. Will you work with the factions who hold influence over the planet, set them against each other, or crush them under your boot?

Paying Tribute

  • Each standard year the administration will assign you a list of items for tribute, from resources to manufactured goods to military equipment to military manpower. Manage your production and population to meet these targets.

  • Interstellar logistics can be tough, so the administration gives some leeway: if you can't meet a target this year they will simply add the shortfall to the next; if you can't meet a specific resource requirement you can make up for it with a larger amount of something else.

  • If the planet has issues of civil strife the administration may be willing to lower it's requirements for the period, especially if you have the right connections. If the planet is producing plentifully they may also decide you can meet higher targets, especially if you have the wrong connections.

Paying Lip Service

  • Long before you became governor there were factions of influence: some local to the planet like noble houses, street gangs, or familial tribes; some throughout the Empire such as the Order of the Mechanicals.

  • Factions will decide how to interact with the player depending on their opinion and influence. Powerful factions may ignore your demands but if you're weak they may work with you against the other factions. Likewise weak factions may not oppose you in public but they think you have too much power they will be more willing to work together against you.

  • Manage faction influence in the open with arrests and appointments, or in the shadows with assassinations, bribery, and sabotage.

You Are Not Alone

  • Every faction is made up of characters that are both influenced by their faction and influence their faction back.

  • Characters have roles from leaders to political appointments to managers of local industry and production.

  • Character personalities affect how they respond to player interactions. Some will be willing to accept a bribe for their own gain while others will reject it and perhaps even expose the attempt publicly. Likewise sometimes a character may try to stop you interfering even if their faction demands otherwise, and some will work with you against their own faction's will.

Broader Conflict

  • Factions have hard power as well as soft, and can start conflicts within a single sector or across the whole planet, against each other or against you.

  • Faction influence in the population and the Planetary Defence Force determines a large part of who will win, so keeping influence and setting laws in your favour can make the difference.

  • Use your spies to figure out who's planning what, including seeing where conflicts may arise before they happen.

Full Planet Designer

  • Choose a planet preset and edit it's appearance or add your own graphical and sector maps with nothing more than simple .png images.

  • Pick from a variety of physical and societal types that affect how your planet will generate: barren deserts, lush jungles, an aristocratic feudal society, a gang ridden spire world, and many more.

  • Customise details as much or as little as you like - say exactly how many people or what resources or factories are in each sector, or how much tribute you have to pay, or simply let the game generate it all for you.

  • Planet generation is determined from a single starting seed so can always reuse a generation you like and share it with others.
