“Newcomer is a language learning videogame that is currently in beta. As a solo developer, it's important to receive community feedback from early access users about the language learning systems/progression so that I spend my development time wisely. I have many additional content and features planned, which are often based on community feedback.”

“I anticipate being in Early Access for 6 - 9 more months.”

“I plan to continue to expand the in-game world and language content. Currently, an early access user has access to learning a limited number of second language vocabulary and phrases. Some planned features are not present in the Early Access version of Newcomer, such as: NPC trading screens, player skills, and a variety of minigames”

Language Immersion: Newcomer is a language immersion experience for beginners to learn and practice 9 languages:

  • Latin-American Spanish

  • French

  • Italian

  • German

  • Castilian Spanish

  • Brazilian Portuguese

  • Turkish

  • Dutch

  • Tagalog

Results: In your adventure, you will:

  • learn and communicate fundamental survival phrases with a variety of in-game NPCs

  • gain exposure to thousands of new words

  • start to identify correct pronunciation

  • learn beginner vocabulary

  • encounter grammar naturally

As a Newcomer, you are given a phrasebook and a quest...

You encounter target language speakers and start to communicate using basic phrases...

Your ability to translate your target language makes it possible to understand your new language...

As you travel through new areas, you review vocabulary by battling hostile creatures...

You start using your new language to complete conversation tasks by discussing a variety of people, places, and things within the world...

You level up and unlock new words and phrases, enabling you to engage in deeper and more nuanced conversations...

You start to utilize intelligent translations which explain individual words in more detail...

Your new language takes you to many parts of the open world...

Ultimately, you must learn your second language to defeat the Dark Crimson...
