Why Early Access?

“I believe early access is the perfect way to show the current state of the game, and to hear valuable feedback from you all. I want to grow as a game developer and any ideas to improve the blacksmith experience will always be greatly appreciated.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“This project started as a hobby, so it is hard to say when it will be fully completed. Right now building interest and a community as well as acquiring feedback is of top priority and therefore I foresee that the full game will be released in a later year. The current planned release date for the full game is December of 2023.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The early access version is to introduce you all to the core mechanics of the game. The final version will have many more goals that will drive you to play even more of the game. In order to see all the content of demo currently implemented, minus the final part of the demo, it can take 30 minutes, to 2 hours, depending on how the random generation treats you. The core mechanics of the game include:

- Accepting and turning in smithing jobs
- Randomly generated spelunking expeditions
- Randomly generated jobs with varying time limits, difficulty and rewards
- Random event encounters
- Paper Mario-esque badge system, allowing you to gain additional abilities
- Multiple crafting recipes that can be found throughout the spelunking expeditions
- Bombs, rope and lantern to allow for more interesting level traversal
- Smithing level progression, thus increasing job reward and difficulty as you play
- Purchasing a mine, which houses the demo's boss - this is the demo's main incentive to keep playing, the final release will have more, detailed below

The current planned additional content for the final release are as follows:

- Smithing competitions with random AI to obtain a higher smithing rank
- Various other landmarks in the world map such as crystal caves, underwater caves and more
- Treasure maps - The system for making the maps already exists, but how to make the treasures appear is still being developed
- Random world-map events - The system for this has already been made, but multiple refinements must still take place before final release.
- Better chat dialogue, which includes randomly generated text
- Material stock market - This system is subject to change, currently wondering if this may ruin the flow of the game
- Additional bosses and levels that house them
- The story - this has been thought of but still needs to be implemented via cutscenes before final release”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The main mechanics of the loop have been implemented with a few incentives to keep playing. The final version will have much more for you to do in order to grow. Please refer to "How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?" for a full list of the current features in the demo.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The early access demo will be free, but the final version will be priced. The current thought price for the final version is 6$.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Any and all suggestions sent to my support email, solsson.olsson3@gmail.com, will be considered as I want to make the smithing journey as exciting and interesting as possible. Please do not feel that I think an idea is bad if I don't implement it. I am still very much an amateur and even when an idea sounds great, the implementation might be too much for me to handle, but consideration and attempts to implement ideas will be made :)”

The kingdom has evolved, and luxuries once known only in story books have now become a reality. You want it all! However, all great people have their humble beginnings. Yours just happens to be smithing. Your beloved mother has left you her forge and you will now embark on a journey to make as much Groven as you can to claim your luxury.

With the aid of your uncle, you will grow as a blacksmith and ruins adventurer. All good smiths know the value of their materials, and you will risk life and limb to obtain them in randomly generated caves, as well as searching for priceless artifacts that your uncle is devoted to research. These materials will be used to create requested items that are posted as jobs on the local village bulletin board, and the more you smith and complete jobs, the more you grow. Who knows, maybe eventually you will attract the eye of some important people... whether they be good or bad.

Main gameplay features include:

  • Procedural generated spelunking levels every time you enter, where you can gather materials and perhaps find other treasures as you explore
  • Smithing competition against 2 AI that allows you to level up your smithing rank upon victory
  • Randomly generated jobs with varying rewards and types such as "high risk, high reward" where if you fail to meet the job deadline, you get heavily penalized, but the reward is multiplied. Jobs also scale with smithing rank
  • Paper Mario inspired bauble system where you can find various baubles as you play and each bauble has a unique gameplay boost, whether it be in combat or in the platforming
  • Random events that can appear on the overworld map, or at your forge, which may lead to reward, though some may require risk
  • Treasure maps that can lead to riches, resources or price-less treasures
  • 15 Crafting recipes for the forge, which can be found as you play
  • Real time combat that uses the dodge roll mechanic inspired by Enter the Gungeon and ability to combo strike or parry enemies with timed input presses

Many more features are planned to be implemented, most of which are incentives to make more and more Groven, and I hope that you will stick by the project as these features are implemented.
