What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“This game is a work of passion of a solo developer doing it as a part-time hobby. While it is very playable, it still requires a ton of work to reach a final state.

As a free and open source software, we have no budget, so we need people's attention in order to find the volunteers to make this game the best it can be.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We have been working for a whole year to get to the point were we can release a working product in early access. We estimate it will take roughly 20 months to have a game which we'll be proud to call complete. This process can be further sped up if more collaborators join this open process.
But of course, like any open source game, it will never truly be finished as long as people have new ideas to add to it”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We wish to have a game with a lot more content. Optimally something like 10 archetypes for each aspect, would provide 10000 possible card pool combinations, making each playthrough truly unique. Not to mention a lot more additions of torments, curios and encounters.

On top of that we wish to improve the UI and presentation quite a bit so that it does not look like the art of a programmer.

Finally a great milestone to be added will be a full legacy campaign, which will tell a complete story through many different playthroughs.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is fully playable start to finish. You have access to 7 different archetypes, providing a total of 8 card pool combinations among 200+ cards to try out. It has 3 complete acts to try and get through (if you can) the three dozen unique torments and the final adversaries.

If you feel the game is too easy (or too hard) it provides an adjustable difficulty panel to shape the experience to fit your comfort zone.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The game is open sourced free software, so it will always be available to not only play for free, but also to share and modify.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community can greatly help the development of this game by not only providing playtesting feedback to allow us to tweak the balance, but also by providing ideas for new cards, torments and encounters which we'll gladly integrate into the game after the necessary balancing changes.

We have a very active and welcoming community and greatly appreciate all feedback and suggestions in all aspects of the game.

Feel free to join our discussion servers on and matrix. Alternatively you can directly open enhancement suggestions and bug reports in our github issue tracker”

About This Game

Hypnagonia is a surrealistic deck-building card game where you play the part of a dreamer captured in a dream realm in their recurring dreams and struggling to overcome their own issues to break out of this loop.

In dreams everything is possible as the dreamer's personality turns into its component aspects which provide the actions to use in the ordeals you have to overcome: Ego, Disposition, Instrument and Injustice

Your chosen archetypes for each aspect will provide you with an initial deck of 12 cards which you will use to overcome Torments in your dreams. Each round you will draw 5 cards and will have 3 immersion to use. Each card in your hand costs an amount of immersion to played and provides some effect in the ordeal. Either providing Confidence to avoid Anxiety, or by interpreting the Torment you're facing. An interpreted Torment is overcome and removed from the ordeal. Do so to all of them, and the ordeal ends, rewarding you with a random choice of new cards (from your chosen archetypes), and/or other things like strange Curios or unlocked Memories.

But that's not all. You will also get to control the dreamer's choices in various surreal or otherwise weird encounters providing multiple options for you to choose from, while you attempt to maintain a balance of their emotional state as they maneuver in their own subconscious until they reach the main Antagonist of each act. Overcome 3 of these Antagonists, and your dreamer can finally achieve the good rest they deserve as they reach a breakthrough in their personal issues.
