What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Much (if not all) of the game's main systems are already implemented, but the goal is to have at least 4 playable characters in the game (there's currently only one), and each character will have their own unique upgrade pools on top of the regular upgrades available. The game also has a fairly modest amount of upgrades available right now, so build variety is fairly limited, but the goal is to add enough upgrades throughout early access that every run will feel fresh for a good amount of hours.

This means that the game is going to require a hefty amount of balancing, and by building a community through early access and taking your feedback into account, I will hopefully be able to create a fun and balanced experience.

I would also like to add as much content to the game as possible before selling it as a finished product, and I feel as though early access is a great place to tinker with the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“With any luck, the game will be finished by the end of Summer, 2022.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I plan for the full version of the game to have more lore to unlock, new playable characters (with their own unique upgrades), more stages, and more upgrade variety.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“All the core game mechanics have been implemented, so the game is in a playable state.

There is currently one playable character with their own unique set of upgrades, as well as various 'global' upgrades to choose from. In total, there are 30+ upgrades in the game at the moment (with more planned). These upgrades can be combined between turrets and the player to make several unique builds.

There is currently a single stage, 5 enemy types, and 1 boss, but several more are planned.

By completing optional challenges in the game you can unlock small snippets of lore, of which there are currently 20 to unlock. I plan for these "Lore Packets" to act as a meta-currency for unlocking new characters and stages in the future, and I also plan to heavily expand the lore for those that are interested.

You can expect an average run to take around 30 minutes if you win, and you can expect it to take at least a few good runs before you start exhausting the available upgrade combinations, and then a few more good runs before you run out of lore to unlock.

Overall, if you're good at the game, expect to exhaust the content in around 2 hours. However, if you're interested in the lore, it could perhaps take a bit longer, perhaps around 2-4 hours.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, the price will gradually increase, likely with each major planned update (namely, new playable characters). However, I don't plan on this being an expensive game.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community feedback via a Discord server and Steam forums will be priceless in helping me to balance the game's many upgrades and make the game more fun.”

About This Game

Survive against the ever-growing mechanical horde for 20 increasingly difficult waves!

A New Blend of Arena-Survival

Mechabot Defender is an arena-survival game similar to "Vampire Survivors" and "20 Minutes Till Dawn", but instead of wielding weapons directly, you are given two turrets that can both automatically fire, as well as be manually controlled (at a cost of precious movement speed). You also have a unique ability at your disposal, so expect some light cooldown management.

Ammo Doesn't Grow On Trees

Unlike other games in the genre, enemies don't drop XP, you are guaranteed an upgrade at the end of every wave. However, your turrets will run out of ammo, and you'll need to bring your best dodging skills to weave through the horde and pick up the corpses of fallen enemies to recycle them for scrap. Scrap can be used to reload turrets, repair yourself, and even reroll your upgrade choices at the end of a wave!

Unique Builds Every Run

There are two types of upgrades in the game, Character Upgrades, and Turret Upgrades. The later of which can be applied to either turret individually, so you can have two builds at once! What about a Fire & Ice combo? Or Explosives & Orbitals? What about a run where you dump every upgrade into one turret, and see how far it can take you?

An Ensemble Cast

There are currently 6 enemy types in the game, all with different stats, and gimmicks, and some even have their own movement patterns. These enemies can range from shield-wielders to swerving vehicles, flyers that ignore obstacles, and ammo-stealers!
