Experience 13 selected 360 VR films being showcased during Cannes XR Virtual. VeeR, a leading VR entertainment platform available worldwide, curates an innovative program, VeeR 360 Cinema. This program dedicated to 360 VR films encourages creators to push the limits of immersive storytelling. The selected films will be showcased in the inaugural VeeR 360 Cinema during Cannes XR Virtual and the winner will be presented with the VeeR Future Award.

KAIJU CONFIDENTIAL

KAIJU CONFIDENTIAL is an immersive VR comedy about big creatures and small slights. Grigon might not be the biggest Kaiju on the block, but he is the most neurotic. When he discovers legendary Mega-Hydra rampaging on his turf, it becomes a battle of passive-aggressive proportions. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019 and nominated for an Annie for Best VR, KAIJU CONFIDENTIAL stars Blake Anderson (WORKAHOLICS) and Paul F. Tompkins (BOJACK HORSEMAN). It was produced at ShadowMachine animation studio from a script by Thomas O’Donnell, and directed by Ethan Shaftel (SPACE BUDDIES, EXTRAVAGANZA).

1ST STEP

“First Step” is at once both a VR documentary and a fairy tale, telling the magical story of a dream come true: the Apollo missions. Experience the elevator ride as you rise up alongside the steaming rocket and then, have a look inside the cramped capsule of the command module. See the missions, from their impressive launch, all the way through to their return, from a new perspective. A captivating film with photorealistic settings of exceptional richness of detail, reconstructed in 3D on basis of original NASA data & with expert advice of ESA. After the landing on the moon, viewers are situated inside of lunar panoramas which have been thoroughly re-created on basis of archive photos of the former Apollo 17 mission. Besides, the astronauts, dressed in suits true to the origin, were shot in front of green screens with a specially constructed stereo 3D camera. The film is available in 4k with the potential to be put out in 8k.

DAUGHTERS OF CHIBOK

On April 14th 2014, the sleepy agrarian community of Chibok, in Borno State, North East Nigeria, was thrust into the global spotlight when the terrorist group Boko Haram, stormed the town at night and abducted 276 teenage schoolgirls from their dormitories. Daughters of Chibok deals with the aftermath of the kidnappings, and explores global issues of gender rights and the right to education.

EVEREST VR JOURNEY TO THE TOP OF THE WORLD

Everest VR is a three part series that takes you from the heart of the European Alps all the way to the summit of Everest itself. The series follows Sherpa Tenji and Jonathan Griffith as they attempt to finish off their friend’s last climb on Everest, something that had never been done before.

OVERLAP

OVERLAP is a suspense VR live-action film telling about a frustrated cartoonist who is trapped in his VR games until he overcomes his inner fear. It takes place in the cartoonist’s home and VR game world, and somewhere in between… You (audience perspective) are beside the cartoonist to witness his adventure, experiencing his ups and downs. It’s a conceptual and allegorical story with an open ending that audience can have their own interpretations. Lin Zhao, as an experienced VR filmmaker, keeps pushing the boundary of spatial storytelling and has smartly crafted the cinematography that organically transfers audience between two different worlds. Produced by China’s top mystery/thriller content production house Abnormal TV and top VR content distribution platform VeeR, OVERLAP will bring a unique voice to global VR content market and be a great VR viewing attempt for audience of Chinese LBE theaters.

ATTACK ON DADDY

Sunday afternoon, exhausted Daddy lies on the couch. He gets annoyed when his daughter Yu-ha asks him to play the air plain for her. After daddy nagged Yu-ha, he falls in a sleep, but when he wakes up after then, he finds that her daughter is missing. After he finds out his daughter’s trace in the doll house, Daddy is going in to the doll house to gets back his daughter.

SHENNONG: TASTE OF ILLUSION (360)

Based on the ancient Chinese mythology, this VR Animation brings you to the epic battle between Shennong, the god-king of Chinese medicine, and a beast from his illusion. Will he conquer the beast, break the illusion, and acquire the valuable herb he sought after?

RAIN FRUITS

“Rain Fruits” is based on a personal writing of Thura, an alien worker from Myanmar in Korea. As a foreign worker and an observer of Korea, Thura depicts social inequalities and discrepancies against alien workers while sharing his poetic comments on the glamours and dark sides of the modern capitalist society. Calmly narrating his views and experiences in a foreign country, he juxtaposes stories of his childhood in his hometown where life was poor but more wholesome. Using empathetic power of VR and the poetic quality of volumetric point cloud imagery, creators of this project wish the audience to become Thura and experience the anger, sadness, alienation and nostalgia of an alien worker in a foreign country. Not just in Korea, but anywhere in the world. In this ever-changing capitalist world, everyone is an alien.

MOWB

A mother and her child weave their story in the mother’s womb. The bond of the umbilical cord ties them with the strongest love. We witness the infinite chain of life the two unveil through this sui generis arterial interchange. This panoramic animation work was created by using Photoshop CC. Among the new technologies released by Adobe, Kazuki, the director of MOWB, used a tool that is unique in drawing on a sphere. By applying the tool, he placed a camera in the center of the sphere and animated while operating the camera.

LOOK AT ME

Zhang, like everyone in the near future, is addicted to virtual world. He is also depressed because his girlfriend doesn’t look at him anymore during their date and, as a result, their sex life also suffers since his girlfriend seems to enjoy cybersex more. Poor Zhang has to find solace in VR chatting software where the girl in VR world actually looks at him when talking to him! A failed rendezvous with his girlfriend makes Zhang wanders in the city at night and discovers a club where everyone gives up virtual world for physical fighting to engage “real interactions” and where everyone actually looks at each other during conversation.

DOCTOR WHO: THE RUNAWAY (360)

In 2019 the BBC marked the return of the longest running sci-fi drama on television with an animated VR adventure THE RUNAWAY. A 13 minute narrative experience set in the world of the Thirteenth Doctor, THE RUNAWAY is a fast paced adventure which takes place entirely in the TARDIS, in real time, where you are the Doctor’s newest companion, and must help her save the galaxy and rescue an alien life-form far from home. You wake inside the TARDIS after a collision. The Doctor introduces you to the thing you collided with. He’s a strange and magnificent ball of sentient energy called Volta. Part surly teenager, part nitroglycerin, and far away from home, Volta is very unstable. In fact, he’s primed to explode. Big time. Unless he can be returned to his home galaxy, sharpish. Problem is, a squad full of galactic busybodies has other plans for Volta. Bad ones. Drawn into a frantic chase, you become the Doctor’s unlikely assistant as she races against time to get Volta home to his parents.

BATTLESCAR – EPISODE 1

BATTLESCAR is an animated VR film starring Rosario Dawson that follows the story of Lupe, a Puerto Rican punk kid living in the Lower east side of Manhattan in 1978. An interactive coming of age story, memories are brought to life as the audience navigates through Lupe’s journey. Get lost and found, get turned upside down in this wild tale of a runaway kid, her friendship with Debbie and how together they create Battlescar, a punk band born from the Bowery.

UPSTANDER

"Upstander" is a 360 animated experience about bullying, and how we can make a difference if we step in. It was created in partnership with the Oculus VR for Good Program and the UK youth charity The Diana Award. The experience uses scale, embodiment, and space to push the boundaries of the medium. Upstander uses backpacks to represent children in a school environment to immerse the audience in the story that defies reality and challenges the participant to think and aspire them take action. How can we be part of the solution and not be part of the problem?
