What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Initially I made this software in my spare time as there was nothing out there that could simulate paintball like I wanted. I will keep continuing to develop this as time allows but returning to full-time work will limit the time I can spent it.
With such a huge response to the inital gameplay videos I shared on my social media, I wanted to make it available as soon as it was usable. Now I'm at that stage, players can start getting use of this software while other development continues in the background.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“As this is a background project, there's no definitive date for this to be finished. As well as that, new features are always being suggested by the community so I don't want to confirm a finish date as these features will continuously be added as I get the opportunity.
I'd suggest you base your purchase on how the software looks now, rather than how it might look in the future as the progress will be slow. Essentially it could be assessed as a finished product as it works as intended, but I'd like to keep adding features before I decide it's actually complete.
I would love to have most features implemented and complete by mid 2021, but that will be very dependant on both the level of support and whether I can find the right people to join the team and polish it up to a finished product.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

  • Better User Interface
  • More Audio cues
  • Upgraded 3D modelling, textures, environments
  • Legacy bunker sets
  • Training programs
  • More target options (different shapes, movement etc)
  • Multiplayer with or without VR

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Grit Paintball is currently SINGLE PLAYER ONLY, with no AI or enemies, and is designed as a training aid for tournament paintball players.

Currently it has a functional field builder with the 2022 NXL bunker set which allows players to build their own layouts or replicate others. These layouts are saved as a simple text file which can be saved, and then sent and received (outside of the game) to other players. This is all done without the VR headset with a mouse and keyboard for ease of use.
You can also add as many targets as you'd like into the layout.

The menu allows for adjustability of the in-game experience, letting the player set the firing mode (Uncapped, Capped Semi, Ramp, or Full Auto), Max/Target Rate of Fire, Paintball colour, Paint Breakage percentage (to practice bouncing paint off bunkers), and whether the player has unlimited ammo or needs to hit the reload button to fill up their loader.
You can also save your own controller or tracker position preferences, allowing the player to get their grip feeling just right.

Once you hit play, you chuck on your HMD and you're on the ground in the field you've created, with bunkers and targets laid out where you've built them. You can then teleport around the field to look at the layout from a players perspective and analyse it how you would during a field walk.

One VR Controller / Vive Tracker is all you need to bring up a trackable gun, which fires with the trigger input. You can shoot paintballs at the targets which will change colour and play audio on contact, or splat onto the ground, bunkers or netting.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I don't plan on changing the price once the game is complete.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“So far, the feedback from social media has already shaped some of the development decisions and I'm hoping to get as much feedback as possible because it's an experience made for the players. The easiest way to get in touch is at my Facebook page - www.facebook.com/dbcustomworks”

About This Game

Grit Paintball is a Virtual Reality tournament paintball trainer and simulator. Aimed mostly at current paintball players looking to gain an edge in the real game, Grit allows players to practice from home.

Grit uses a mouse, keyboard and monitor for the menu and field building parts of the game, and then you enter VR to experience the field you've designed.

Grit Paintball has an in game layout editor with an up to date 2022 NXL Paintball bunker set, which can be locally saved and loaded, as well as easily shared between players by sending a small text file via email or messenger. By utilising VR, a player can gain an edge by being able to 'walk' a field layout before a real life event and find blind shots, bounce shots, lanes and other areas which could be missed when walking a real field before an event. It also allows field owners and tournament operators to walk their field design to see whether adjustments need to be made before publishing a layout for a real event.

Targets are also included in the field editor, allowing players to practice muscle memory for breakouts, snap shots and, with a large enough play area, moves from bunker to bunker.

The game only requires one VR controller (but will detect 2) as it's designed so the player can replicate the feel of swapping their gun from hand to hand. It is fully compatible with the Vive Tracker, or using a VR controller. Custom hardware is being developed to allow players to utilise their own paintball gun with a Vive Tracker so that players can get the most immersive and realistic feel possible. Of course, anyone can design their own hardware if they have a Vive Tracker!
