Why Early Access?

“Please understand: this game is an experiment into mutation within a game. To our knowledge this idea has not been extensively explored within gaming. We have developed the idea into the context of an indie game and would like to find a community of gamers who are excited about how this design pattern works & its potential to add to the creative medium of gaming in the future. Given the procedural nature of the game, we want to make sure the game balance, economics and proceduralisation is right for the audience. We also want to test the controls and save features.”

“3 months”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The game currently has all the content and features to constitute a 'beta'. The game can be played from start to finish with final graphics and very few, if any, bugs. However, because the game relies heavily on procedural generation of loot, maps and enemies we want to make sure the final game has the right difficulty, balance, AI, economics and controls. For example if people are finding the start of the game too easy, or the procedural generation is not producing divergent enough permutations, we can alter this slightly to please the community. We could also potentially look at adding better save features and more supported control schemes or languages than English if there is a viable audience for the game.

Aspects such as the story and graphics are not viable to rework.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Please refer to the "About This Game" section for more details on the games activities and features. The current game is not an early stage prototype with placeholder graphics, and therefore we would not expect to add significant new features to it as we go which would result in it becoming a fundamentally different game. The current build is very reflective of a beta quality, with final 3D graphics, UI art, audio & music, FMV and optimized 3D rendering. The game can be played from start to finish and all content and upgrades can be used and unlocked.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We are prepared to offer a slightly better discount for early access customers than post-early access customers. The game is not in a prototype state and is quite reflective of a Beta product, so we feel this is a fair show of appreciation for early adopters but also reflective of the work already put into the game so far.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We would welcome feedback on the game difficulty, economics and controls using Steam community features.”

About This Game

Underzone is a new twist on the 'roguelite' genre, featuring procedural enemies built out of unique combinations of components.

  • ENTER an underground labyrinth
  • SMASH your own path through the world
  • SHOOT unpredictable mutating enemies
  • PLAY through procedurally generated runs
  • UNCOVER a dark sci-fi conspiracy narrative

The game plays like a twin-stick shooter in which you must clear rooms of hostiles; however, every time you progress to the next zone a new enemy type will be introduced and the existing enemies will upgrade their ‘DNA’ in unpredictable ways. The combination of both enemy and map procedural generation creates a tense new challenge every time.

  • A range of futuristic weapons to shoot and upgrade
  • Procedural maps that are non-linear: if you see a wall, you can smash through it!
  • Fully voice-acted narrative monologues to discover in a non-linear order
  • A metagame where completed rescues reward you with XP to spend on different upgrade licences to be used in-game
