What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The game Offcoast will be in early access (beta release) as the final stage before official release.

The game in this beta is fully playable as it is - with all the core gameplay already implemented, but I am hoping to sort out any last bugs and as well to find a good balance in overall gameplay elements.

The plan is to gather and take the player base views into consideration as development continues.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The early access is estimated to last 6 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“No severe bugs - and overall good balance.

Aside from that, 2 things, not in the game yet will be included for the final release.

First a game-playthrough overview where the player can see all finished - succeeded or failed games. Secondly, I would like players to be able to see previously seen in-game cinematics from the main menu.

The last thing is an optional thing but it would be nice to see it through. If the game is a success - the plan is to include a rework of the graphics and a custom soundtrack.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is at the moment playable on

- 3 difficulties (normal, hard and extreme),
- 3 playable factions
- 4 unlockable ships - each with several different sub-types.

- 3 base class-types for crew (soldier, medic and engineer) - but more are unlocked as algae is collected.

The player is free to explore the waters in the starting sea - encountering both hostile and friendly ships in the journey. Story-events from reaching the next location on the map moves the adventure and story forward.

To keep up the with the game's increasing difficulty as the ship travels on, the player must partake in ship-combat, ship-upgrades and trading.

Algae collection. Algae works as a free-resource used to upgrade the ship-harbor to increase diversity and to hold a deeper, richer effect on following playthroughs. (This is the rogue-like aspect of the game).

At the moment the algae-system with unlockable crew class-types and mutations are already fully available in early access. Aside from that there also exists a late-game relic system - but not much about these is known to the player at the beginning.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The pricing will be the same for early access aswell as the official release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The plan is to keep working on bugfixing and game balance according to what is written by players on the steam community and in comments left by players in game reviews.

New content and updates will be featured and seen on the steam community page as well.

Additionally, an in-game bug/comment-tool is available for sending any bug reports directly from within the game. These reports will also be looked upon, with any related bugs fixed.”

About This Game

The rogue-like strategy game Offcoast plays out in a subterranean, underwater landscape.

Travel with ship and crew into the deep oceans in search of a rare blue-green algae.
Collect scraps. Upgrade the ship. Improve the crew.

Note: The basics of the game is very close to that from FTL: Faster than Light, but moved down into an underwater environment instead.
This together with several new game systems added to the game should however offer a new experience - whether or not you have already played FTL.

The world has entered a time where life is only sustainable along the coast or on water.
Corporations are the new government - and rule the world from their iron cities.
Raider-factions have arisen and fight for the bitter fun of violence - and the freedom-resistance faction does what it can to restore the world.

Find and store the precious algae for the sake of the earth.
All algae found is stored on your account and will unlock more ship-types, more factions and new difficulties.
It will also allow you to specialize into new different class-types of crew.

Explore the waters, dive deep - and excavate old relics from previous mutant civilizations.

The developers describe the content like this:

In-game cinematics may contain raw conversational violence (in text) or swearing.
