What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“As a one-man team, fresh from college, finding the time to develop a game on top of full-time work is difficult. With early access, I’m given more time and freedom to work on this project and give you a great and comprehensive Japanese learning game!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Around a year and a half. Please follow us on Twitter for updates: @NiHonGoToKi1”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full release of NiHonGoToKi will have unlockable personalization features, such as backgrounds, textures, special trims and more, making your game experience your own. As well as that, there will be more mini-games to help with fun memorization, a database to let you check commonly used Japanese words and advanced grammar-based games.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Currently the game teaches you the Hiragana and Katakana characters, as well as the combination of characters, called Yō-on.

The learn mode is where you, aptly, learn both Hiragana and Katakana. The board will show you the character in it’s Hiragana and Katakana form, along with the Rōmaji and what the character sounds like in natural Japanese.

The test mode, again aptly, tests you on what you’ve learnt in the learn mode via a series of games. For every character you get right, you get a point! If you get multiple characters correct in a row, you get combo points! How many points can you get? Let us know!

If you’re good enough, you’ll unlock the advanced mode, pitting you against both Hiragana and Katakana without Rōmaji!

Everything you learn in the game is tracked by the database. The database learns what characters you’re learning quickly, or having trouble with, and tailors the game to suit you. It used a 9 point tracking system for each Phonetic sound to work out where you are in your learning process.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“During Early Access, the game will be half of its full retail cost, making it a bargain if you get in early!”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We’ve created a special Facebook group for players for feedback on the game. We want to know what you’ve enjoyed, not enjoy, what could be done better, or if it was too hard!

Please join us: https://www.facebook.com/groups/631921963904142/”

About This Game

NiHonGo is the word for the Japanese language and ToKi is a word for time but used for when: NiHonGoToKi - Now is the time to learn and play!

NiHonGoToKi will help you learn Japanese the fun way! The game is designed with a language learning backend with the front end being a fun puzzle game that takes the boring away from studying the tough Japanese language.

Currently, the game contains the entire Hiragana and Katakana alphabets as well as the combination of characters, called Yō-on. You’ll be taught both character sets in the Learn Mode, along with their Romaji (English character versions) counterpoint and then tested on your progress through Test Mode, where you can gain points (and combo points!) and become fluent as you have fun.

Everything you do in the game is tracked through the database, which learns your strengths and weaknesses and tailors the game to you, giving priority to characters you’re having trouble with. The database kicks in after you’ve been through both alphabets once.

If you score highly in Test Mode, you can unlock the special Advanced Mode which strips away the Romaji and lets you learn Hiragana and Katakana like a native.
