Starting a Development Blog and Other News

I started a development blog. I should have done it a long time ago, the first article goes into more details about this.

I intend to write an article every week detailing what I'm working on.

Perhaps I will write about the development of Lifeless Vanguard in retrospect.

I hope it will be entertaining for you to read about my adventures in game development.

And if you're interested in Lifeless Vanguard or other games my studio will make in the future, it will be a nice opportunity to discover the behind the scenes, and perhaps also have some input on my design decisions.

If you want me to talk about some stuff in particular please don't hesitate to leave a comment below or contact me by email.

What's Next?
I'm working on a new trailer for Lifeless Vanguard, I've drawn some story elements that I hope will put the game into a broader context.

Since this is an arcade shooter, I didn't believe it was appropriate to have a narrative in-game. However, the game does have characters, a global conflict between multiple factions, and everything happens in a complex and vibrant universe.

Perhaps I could explore this narrative element in other games or in the form of comics or videos. I'm still figuring this out. The game is just about pew-pew and boom-boom, so let's leave it at that.

For the game itself, I have been designing the endless survival mode these past two weeks. This and the work on the trailer have taken all my time and energy.

Thank you for reading. Talk to you soon.

Update 1.3 - Super guns are here!

This update aims to add more variety to the gameplay and includes 3 new “super guns”: Heavy machinegun, Plasma Cannon and Death Ray. We’ve also added some cool new features like screen shake, read below for more details.

Definition of the word super by Merriam-Webster:
1. Of high grade or quality: CHECK!
2. Very large or powerful: CHECK!
3. Exhibiting the characteristics of its type to an extreme or excessive degree: and CHECK!

Watch our devlog video where we test these cool new weapons:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngaC7Uw02-U

Gameplay
  • Added 3 new super weapons (Heavy Machinegun, Plasma Canon, Death Ray) that will temporarily replace the main gun, grab the pickups dropped by the Swarmers (the yellow ships) to unlock them. The guns are limited by ammo, not a timer, the gameplay is stressful enough, we’re not going to add timers on top of that.
  • Added more opportunities to grab health packs and super guns during boss fights.
  • Added screen shake to bomb, boss destruction, and super weapons. It’s just enough to make the game look cooler.
  • Changed the camera ahead distance from 2 to 2.5, makes the camera just a little more “aggressive”, which is the perfect feel we want for the game.
  • XP pickups no longer display the xp bonus when player is at maximum level, this has confused some Youtubers that playtested the game: XP pickups did and still grant you score points when at max level.
UI
  • The HUD now displays “MAX” when player is at maximum xp level.
  • Added energy bar for bomb reloading to HUD
  • Added energy bar for super weapons
Optimization
  • In the final stages, some stuttering was caused by some objects (player rockets, special effects) that were not properly added to our pooling system. This caused the Unity garbage collector to steal some frames from the gameplay, this is now fixed.
  • Reduced the player’s rockets lifespan from 30 to 4 seconds. 30 was overkill.

We noticed a typo in the build, it is "Plasma Cannon" instead of "Plasma Canon", this will be fixed in the next patch.

About This Game

An unknown hostile force has been identified by our spy satellites, their jump signatures are locked on our planet. We have no defenses. If they get here, we are doomed.

There is, however, one last chance for us: the top-secret Vanguard prototype she stole from us. That silver-haired she-devil should be hanged for treason, but we have no time for that now. We have given her temporary access to our network of satellites, she will hack their warp drives and trap them in a little yellow box, you will pilot the Vanguard, lure enough of them in and try to take down their mothership. You are our only hope.

Become an Unstoppable Destruction Machine!

The only way to have a fighting chance against the mothership is to destroy enemy spaceships and steal their energy shards. This will upgrade your weapon systems and make you stronger. Be careful not to get hit, every damage you take reduces the energy charge of your weapon systems.

Take Down Their Capital Ships

We have identified two capital ships accompanying the main force. You must take them down to attract the attention of the mothership. Be careful, these capital ships are not like regular enemies, they use bullet patterns to confuse their opponents, I hope your dodging skills are on par with your shooting abilities.

Train, Get Stronger, Give Them Hell!

We have systems in place to reset the current timeline in case something goes wrong. Don't be afraid to try again and again. The enemy moves and shoots in specific patterns, you can learn their tricks, and predict their next move.

Key Features

  • A minimalistic and intense single-player arcade twin-stick shooter experience highly focused on shooting, dodging and the pleasure of destruction
  • Try to beat 9 challenging levels in one go, destroy the mothership, and save the world!
  • An experience-based progression system that upgrades your weapons and allows you to become a dangerous destruction machine
  • A rising difficulty curve reminiscent of the classic arcade games that will challenge even the most seasoned players
  • 3 cool "super guns" to unlock during your run: the Plasma Cannon, the Heavy Machinegun and the Death Ray
  • 16 enemy types each with their own movement and attack patterns
  • Intuitive mouse and keyboard controls with full support for game controllers, all controls are rebindable in the settings menu.
  • 8 achievements that will take a great deal of skill to get!
  • Steam leaderboard to compare your score with your friends or other steam users, prove you're the best by getting your name to the top of the leaderboard!
