Sony Online Entertainment is introducing a three-part series of downloadable content for DC Universe Online, centered around Wonder Woman's homeland. The first, Amazon Fury Part 1, will take place in Gotham City as WW's mother, Queen Hippolyta, has launched an attack on the world of men. Heroes will work on protecting Gotham, while villains will ally with Circe instead to assault it.

While Sony Online Entertainment's MMOs are free-to-play, the company offers subscriptions, entitling players to a number of benefits. Starting April, the company plans on doing away with game subscriptions, giving all paid members access to premium content across all of their games.

The new SOE All Access plan includes memberships to all EverQuest games, including the upcoming EverQuest Next. In addition, it includes premium access to DC Universe Online, Planetside 2, and Dragon's Prophet.

During writer Geoff Johns' tenure on the Green Lantern books, the DC Universe had a brief, unyielding fascination with the color spectrum, resulting in seven different Lantern corps. DC Universe Online is ready to unleash this colorful attack on its fans with War of the Light Part I, set to deploy on January 28. However, Legendary members can start donning their red rings and begin spewing pools of Rage right now.

Now that DC Universe Online is out on PS4, it's time for Sony Online Entertainment to start cranking out more expansions. The next, 'War of the Light,' will introduce a brand new storyline and new power set.

War of the Light will have lanterns of all colors losing connection with their emotional spectrum entities. Four Corps--Green, Blue, Sinestro, and Red--are warring in Downtown Metropolis and the planets of Mogo and Ranx. Players will team up with either Hal Jordan or Sinestro to investigate the colored mists that are affecting citizens' emotions.

In preparation for the upcoming PS4 version of DC Universe Online (available at launch), Sony Online Entertainment has completely revamped the graphics of their free-to-play MMO. PS3 players will see some benefit, but the biggest impact will be seen on PlayStation 4 and PC.

DCUO executive producer Larry Liberty promises that Update 31 will offer a "sweeping, game-wide graphical upgrade," calling it "without a doubt the biggest technical update we have ever done." Specifically, the level of detail on textures has been revamped. "That's perhaps nowhere more obvious than when observing the Earth from the Watchtower," Liberty said.

According to creative director Jens Andersen, the game's arrival on PS4 will feature over 2,000 updates designed to make it feel like a brand new experience, along with Vita Remote Play functionality and a new companion app.

Sony Online Entertainment announced a number of planned DLC packs for DC Universe Online. The plan is to alternate between large and small group DLC in the future, with large DLC focusing on raids, while small DLC focusing on solo/duo experiences.

Upcoming storylines will be presented in three parts--a trilogy of DLC. Following Sons of Trigon is "War of the Light: Part 1," which will introduce the Blue Lantern Corp. Across three DLC packs, a new version of Metropolis will be continuously populated with additional Green Lantern themed content.

Following War of the Light, SOE will release Amazon Fury. Another trilogy, this story focuses the Amazons declaring war on men. These add-ons will also introduce "amazing creatures from Greek mythology" for players to fight.

The final DLC announced at SOE Live was "Halls of Power," which will require players to defend their league halls from the likes of Apokolips and Darkseid. But for players that don't want to pay for content, There will also be free content accessible to all players. For example, the armory will introduce PVP and PVE leaderboards for all players.

Update: After publishing this story, SOE contacted us to clarify that PS3 support will continue, and that there are currently no plans to stop updating the PS3 version. The original story follows.

DC Universe Online executive producer Larry Liberty can't wait for players to transition from PS3 to PS4, saying his team will "celebrate" once they no longer have to support Sony's aging console.

Ultimately, the team is limited by PS3's capabilities. "People want everything you can imagine in the DC Universe, and that's a lot. There's over 4000 NPCs, there's an almost infinite amount of power combinations," Liberty told Shacknews. "I would certainly love to do more. We have to figure out continually how to fit in memory on effectively a 220MB system--that's how much system RAM we have on PS3. To make that work is going to be a challenge for us."

Unfortunately for Liberty and his team, the game's audience is largely comprised of PS3 players. The game's popularity on console is due to being "the first MMO on PS3" and "console-friendly," to boot. With most of the audience on PS3, SOE has no choice but to "keep servicing PS3 for a while."

Making a PS4 version of DCUO has some benefits for PS3 players, as there will be a slight boost in graphics even on Sony's current-gen system. "We are making some art changes that will benefit all platforms as a result of PS4 development. So, PS3 will look a bit better. But rally, it's going to benefit PS4 and PC most," Liberty said.

Of course, "it will happen at some point," Liberty said about no longer supporting the PS3 version of the game. "I do expect that eventually, PS4 to come out, and probably be more successful than PS3 was as a platform. It wouldn't surprise me if we do get a pretty quick migration, but we'll keep servicing PS3 for a while," he said.

DC Universe Online will be getting its eighth expansion pack later this year, in time for the launch of the PS4 version of the game. "The good news for PS3 players is you can move to PS4, keep your friends, play together," Liberty pointed out, hopeful that many players will switch to the next-gen.
