About This Game

Hacker Evolution Duality is the hacking simulation game, developed by exosyphen studios. Based on the successful Hacker Evolution game series, it has been completely redesigned to offer an impressive and new gaming experience.
Hacker Evolution Duality starts in the early days of Brian Spencer when he was nothing more than a brilliant programmer. It than fast forwards to the future, where he has to stop an Artificial Intelligence he has created, unknowingly and take back control of a giant company he once used to own.
You have to hack into computers using various tools, from a basic firewall cracker, to sophisticated voice print authentication systems. Steal money to finance your objectives, buy hardware upgrades or bribe off other hackers that are present in the game. Go as far as bypassing complex security systems to make your way into buildings and steal data. Frame people or even murder them using ingenious traps.
You are not alone in the game. Other hackers controlled by a complex artificial intelligence, will stop at nothing to destroy you.
The game features a single player mode where you follow the game's story and an open world mode, where you play a death match against other hackers.

Key features:

  • Redesigned interface and game play
  • Large open world populated by AI hackers
  • Amazing new graphics, sounds and animations
  • Choice of game play: pursue the game's objectives, or play a never ending and evolving open game.

This game is a mess.

The screenshots are complete lies, the only "hacking" you will ever see in this game is a picture of a map, some dissapearing red blocks, and the game over screen. Yes, this game is impossible . There are no tutorials or even a basic explanation of the rules or how to play. It was clear that this game was rushed and almost no effort went into it. I realy wish this game was good ant that's why I bought it. Don't make the same mistake I made. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!

No. Just no.

This game just completely erased the fact that players who play Hacking-simulator-games want to write the little amount of "code", since that is more or less the only thing that is fun.
This game you use the mouse, not completely, but almost. Lets say you use the mouse for 95%. I quit the game during the second mission, since there was some kind of graphics-bug in it so I couldnt see the buttons I needed to press.
I restarted the game but I couldn't see them until I quit to menu and then loaded my saved profile.

*sigh* What happened? I played the first iteration of this game years ago and was hooked by it. I come back today and play this desperate travesty.

A wonderful, simple little hacking game utterly ruined by unnecessary features and a terrible GUI.

Play Hacknet or Uplink instead.

Vertical sync and higher resolution
open Steam\steamapps\common\Hacker Evolution Duality\sys-hed-appdata and open the settings.ini file in text editor of your choice.

under the last bottom line add "vertical_sync 0" (without the " ")

i currently use
video_fullscreen 0
video_windowed_width 1920
video_windowed_height 1080
sound_volume_music 60
sound_volume_fx 40
input_softtouch 1
serial_number 0
game_autosubmit 0
game_ow_name hedPlayer
game_openworld_state nnnnnnnnn
vertical_sync 0

with these settings there is no vertical synchronisation. and you have to open hacker evolution duality via the executable in Steam\steamapps\common\Hacker Evolution Duality.
if you open it through steam the settings will be ignored and vsync will be back. mainly because i think there is no game-save-data folder in the "my documents" folder being read as final launch of the game happens. sort of a read me settings launch check (idk?) :)

but there is a problem. when you open it via the executable in the game folder after editing the vsync line in settings; 2 instances will start. 1 with vsync on and 1 without. you can easily ALT +F4 the first instance and open the other to play without vsync.
now you can close the instance with vsync and keep playing without vsync or however you'd like :)

Hacker Evolution: Duality is hard. Not difficult, just hard. Not challenging in a flexible, puzzle-solving way... it's just a big useless heavy hunk of rock with a nice paint job.

The point and click interface (with keyboard shortcuts) is fast and fluid. The visuals are clean and simple and I quite like them. Sadly, the gameplay is downright awful. You have 30 minutes to complete most scenarios, but hostile AI will rip you apart well before that. In many cases that means you have to move fast and cross the finish line just before the attacks crash you. There is no way to deter or foil enemy AI in this game... your firewall, trace, etc. mean nothing to them. It's just a constant damage-over-time effect once triggered. This ruins the game. The fun part is exploring the servers, messing with switches and log files, and finding hidden backend servers to bounce off of. But you are given zero time to explore and no method of outsmarting the enemy other than shutting them down entirely, which is often detrimental to your efforts. MIssions are about trial and error finding the set path to complete objectives. After several attempts you will then simply do everything you need to as fast as you can to beat the AIs. There is nothing clever in this game. It's a hacker game with tunnel vision.

$20 is the current regular price. I paid less than a dollar and feel ripped off. It feels like a cell phone app. It has no scope. It has no depth. It's just blah in a pretty wrapper to entice you.

This game throws you into a puzzle scape of the earth. One which is almost impossible to break from the start, with very little explanation of how to win the puzzle. The comparisom to Uplink aside, this game isn't worth your money.

The first game was a lot of fun, more of a hacker themed puzzle than a hacker simulator, but I really really enjoyed it. Then the second game came out that was similar to the first, but crashed a lot and had a story that wasn't nearly as interesting...

Then there's this game.... replace all of your console commands with gui interfaces, add in ai hosts that you have to hack in the beginning just so you can be constantly attacked (with no way to stop them) throughout the level. Boring and not fun. I can see that the developer put in a lot of time and effort trying to make something new, but this? Worthless...

Uplink, the 12-year old "hacking simulator", is possibly the finest game of its type yet created. But it is definitely showing its age and I'm not averse to trying something new. On the face of it, Hacker Evolution Duality looks to be an excellent successor to that beloved classic. But first appearances are frequently misleading.

Hacker is not a game; it is a collection of dull and fiddly mini-games. While it has an excellent presentation, the gameplay itself is nothing more than pushing a button at the right time; an uninteresting race against the clock that you need to repeat dozens of times in each mission. It looks great - it has the appearance of Hollywood hacking nailed - but it quickly degenerates into uninteresting repetitiveness. And just to make things even less fun, the controls were stiff and unresponsive; just the thing for a game that demands quick reflexes. Despite its stylish gloss, the game fails to engage on almost every other levels and ultimately is not particularly fun.

I played the first Hacker Evolution and I loved it. So when I heard that there was going to be a sequel, I jumped at the chance to purchase it!

However, this game has little to recommend it, and doesn't much resemble the original at all. The original made you feel like an actual hacker, typing commands into a console. This game is a GUI based point-and-click. You don't get the feel of being a hacker that you might expect from the title.

Not only that, but the gameplay is boring, and a lot of the tools at your disposal are arbitrarily difficult to use, and the time limit placed on you just makes things stressful and not fun when the tools take almost as long or longer than the time allotted to you. Do not buy.

This game is absolute garbage. It's not "open world" and it sure isn't full of amazing anything. I'm sure you're thinking "Oh man this looks just like Uplink!" and you would be right it does LOOK like Uplink which suckered me into buying this hunk of digital crap. This game is nothing like Uplink and is utterly disappointing to play.

I bought this game really cheap, but free is the only fair price for it. It is really bad.

First of all it starts on my second display which is my TV, took a while to realize it.

Second, there is a bug where you can't read messages (gives some file not found error), apparently the dev knows about this since Jan or Feb or something and it still isn't fixed. There's a dude that posted some workaround with converting mp3 files to ogg and changing some text files around to make it work, this way you can actually read mission objectives.

The game it is kind of crap, it is not very intuitive what you need to do, in fact in the tutorial the AI hacked me down to 0 firewall and 0 integrity and I had no idea what would I need to do to counter it. Don't be mistaken by the name the game has nothing to do with actual hacking or IT skills, it's just a theme, so it's not about me not knowing what a computer is (I do, working since 15 years in IT).

I know now it's a rather old game and it's not a big financial loss to try it, but if I knew what I know now I wouldn't have paid even 1 euro for it. Angry birds is more fun and an actual game that works compared to this (I don't play angry birds, never undestood the fascination, it's a really stupid game).

What sort of game developer makes you pay for a tutorial? The game is glitchy, even the developers cannot give a proper one and done solution for users who have glitches. Not worth 20 dollars, certainly not worth the dlc.

STAY AWAY! If you came looking for another Uplink clone, THIS IS NOT IT. Hacker Evolution: Duality tries to come across as a worthy sucessor to the masterpiece that was Uplink, and falls far, far short. The game is outright unfinished on my system, with the game menus broken and unusable, and there is no story. The game just feels wrong, and you would get more for your dollar looking elsewhere.

Let's take a look at a simple mission in the open world. You can choose your target to attack, then choose whether to hack into it or damage it (that takes like two clicks). If you were lucky, you will take victim's money and buy some +stats. Now you may choose your next target to attack. After a few attacks, everyone attacks you and tear you down. In the single player, there's a little more to do, but there could be really more content!

I’m a sucker for hacking games, yet another reason I swooped this one up when it was on sale…and have constantly regretted it. The worst part is there’s nothing inherently wrong that this game does other than just being derivative and generic. It tries to accomplish what Uplink did and with an admittedly better interface…but just comes off as uninteresting and kinda boring. I mean, I’m not even sure exactly how else to put it.

You’re doing the same thing over and over again, which is what you’re doing in most hacking games, but this one doesn’t seem to be as lively or interesting as other hacking games, so…yeah. I guess it’s hard to explain exactly WHAT is wrong with it, but it just comes off as boring.

What an awful thing that is even considered a game. The only thing that's fun is when you get to type in your name. Definitely not worth anything, time or money wise. Got this he for free from a point trade on a website. Losing few free points is better than losing $20.00. This game is pointless, stupid and just plain misery. I've seen Children's Shows with more thought than this.

Hated it 15 minutes in-game.
Wish I could wash it away from game library and leave no trace of it.

Total failure of any expectations. Not clear. Not creative. Not artish. Repetitive. Not tech-savvy AT ALL. I can't think of anyone I can recommend this piece of hack to.

I've bought this game years ago driven by curiosity, to find out what it takes to be one of the most hated kind of people in the virtual world. Well, i've gained zero knowledge thanks to the gods, and uselessness of this product. To explain myself politely, this is not a game, but a mental warfare without the cold trace of fun.
The music itself doesn't match with my style, some electronic stuff, tastes are so different between peoples, so i can't rate it but acceptable enough. The game itself lacks of game elements, we have 7 "maps" total, (which are nothing more but a desktop-like picture with a few dots named as servers) there are some crazy time limited memory games and thats all. You have to count down numbers in a box from 63 to 0 while enemy servers attacking you (rofl), and there is another component of the game which is totally the same...
I was in hope for a patch which adds some more features/maps or something to the game, but no, everything remained the same. Even the Vsync bug, which makes the HUD buttons disappear after each match, because the game have no graphics options and you have to mess with your own video card to play the game. There are random crashes and i've also lost my profile with my savegames and achievement progresses because for some reason, no idea how.
And what is the most surprising, perhaps the price, you still have to pay 20€ for this headache after years!
If i truly regret wasting money on a product, well this is it. The honest price shall be around 0,5€, so try to find something else about this genre, go away and don't look back, avoid to get robbed. I don't like to downvote games, because it is basically a waste of time, but this must be serve as warning to all, to forget this game. Like what i try to do.
