Announcement for Windows 10 Users

Hi,

It has come to our attention that unfortunately, the Commandos series will not run on Windows 10.

The reason for this is the lack of support for the older version of Direct X used by the game (Version 5)

While we continue to look for solutions to bring the Commandos series to more modern platforms, we unfortunately cannot offer any specific time frame for when this may occur due to engine's age.

As this is the case, we have two suggestions for anyone attempting to run the game in the Windows 10 environment:

1. Install a virtual machine such as VirtualBox or VMWare and run a virtual environment of Windows XP for improved compatibility. This is recommended but may not solve all issues.

2. If you have played the game for less than two hours, you can claim a refund via Steam.

Beyond the Call of Duty is like an expert mode for Behind Enemy Lines. There are only a handful missions, but they are all incredibly long and incredibly difficult. If you want a great and challenging game, look no further.

Long version:
Commandos: Beyond the Call of Duty is a stand-alone expansion pack for the critically acclaimed classic isometric strategy/stealth game, Behind Enemy Lines.

Like the base game, it features a group of commandos in eight scenarios, who must complete a set of objectives– mostly sabotage– deep inside enemy territory. Although all missions are loosely based on historical events, there is no actual plot, only short briefings.

BtCoD is notorious even among old Commandos fans for its difficulty. The levels are not only gigantic– larger than the biggest one in BEL– but they are also full of enemies placed in the most nefarious ways possible.
To combat this, all commandos received new abilities. Some are unique, some are universal: for example, anyone can now distract soldiers by throwing rocks, or lure them with cigarette packs.
There is also a non-lethal way to deal with enemies now, letting you take hostages to use as distractions. On some levels it’s almost impossible to progress without using these “puppets”.
The imbalance between characters wasn’t really addressed, since you still need to use the Green Beret or the Spy to silently kill or knock out, and to carry enemies. Therefore, the role of the others is mostly reduced to hostage controllers.

Still, this difficulty is what made BtCoD more memorable, and probably even more loved than the original, which will seem way too easy and short in comparison. So, if you ever want to experience some difficult game that is not just another indie platformer, you can always rely on Pyro Studio’s classic.

Background:
Purchased as part of a bundle from Bundle Stars. I played the first two games in the series to death back when they came out.

Impressions:
The game stands up today much as it did when it came out. It's a damn fine strategy game that's a blast to play and highly rewarding. However unlike it's predecessor this game is more of an expansion pack, with only 8 missions they instead ramped the difficulty to near frustrating levels.

While still fun and rewarding for the most part I really started to detest the 'mansion kidnap', 'rail yard' and final mission for the sheer bloody minded difficulty of sections those missions where trail and error started to get irritating.

There are some missteps for sure with elements that are seemingly only solvable in a single method and theres one right in the first mission that can leave you stranded just as you thought you were done and you have to go back a few saves or even start again.

Fixes:
As with Behind enemy lines there are a number of serious issues with the game on a modern PC that make it almost unplayable.

See the page on the 'Commandos Wikia' for 'Commandos: Beyond the call of Duty Fixes' for a collection of bug fixes to stabilise the game and make it playable.

http://commandos.wikia.com/wiki/Fixing_Commandos

The Good:
*A classic formula that stands up today for it's simplicity and functions.
*Missions can be tackled many ways.
*The settings have a historical context and introduced as such.
*Missions are huge and diverse.
*Fast save/load system makes experimentation less frustrating than you'd think.
*Huge sense of triumph from executing a plan that takes out even a single awkward guard.
*Looks pretty good considering it's age.
*New mechanics, some of which are interesting and alter your tactics.

The Bad:
*Installs ok on Steam but multi-core affinity issues requires some manual tweaking.
*Many missions have sections where there is only one practical solution.
*The difficulty level is a massive leap up upward over the original game.
*A new character only appears in a single mission.
*Cigarette packs effectively give everyone a Decoy box, messing with the balance.
*Shorter tougher campaign.

Recommended for: War, Action and isometric strategy fans and fans of the original.

Conclusion.
7/10. Once the stability issue is fixed it's a reasonable follow up to the original.

The Commandos series are one of my favorite childhood games. I bought the Commandos collection, great games, worth every penny.

10/10

I highly recommend buying the collection.

P.S. Running great on Windows 8.1 x64 with no speed problems/compability issues.
