What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We really want early feedback from fans of the Redwall books on things like look, narrative, tone, music etc. It an extremely high priority that we capture the spirit of the books and what better way to do that than get the fan base looking around as early as possible.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“4-8 months”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Initial early access release will be a single outdoor exploration level to give players exposure to the core game mechanics in this stealth-adventutre game where the player must explore and solve the environmental puzzles along the way. This core path is supplemented with riddles, loot to find, and mysteries to unravel.
As updates release sequentially we introduce new features and new levels including:
  • Increased movement options like secret passages and high-wire paths
  • Robust scent mechanic adding a new way to sense the surrounding environment
  • Wind (Drafts) that change how scents travel through spaces
  • Character building RPG-lite feature
  • NPC party management system
  • 7 new interior and exterior environments
  • Robust NPC conversation mini-game
  • Musical accompaniment mini-game
  • Feast preparation and assignment mechanic
  • "Agro" feature to neutralize rat enemies

Throughout the early access period an integrated fan-feedback tool allows point-specific communication between early access players and developers. This is both a bug-reporting tool but also a feedback feature for getting the tone and feel for this beloved property just right. We've made it a strong priority to listen to Redwall fans as we've come this far and this tool is just the continuation of that commitment at the next level.

The final game is expected to cover ~20 hours of game play and act as an "episode 1" of a 4 episode series that culminates in a multi-player co-op adventure.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“1st release is a single player outdoor adventure level including multiple environmental challenges, puzzle-solving and opportunities to find secret lore and resources.
In addition to the beta-quality Old Moss Creek level we include a number of scenes in various states of development like the Alpha-level Flight to the Lighthouse, a movement lab and an artistic scene for the Redwall Abbey Library.
The game is running at full FPS with full support for graphics settings, rewindable keys and a fully integrated bug-reporting + commenting tool to enable robust back-and-forth communication with the dev team.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. We expect the "earliest access" players to get the deepest cut with the price inching up as we get closer to full release and implement features.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We've already established a solid pattern and reputation for soliciting and using feedback from the Redwall fan base via the Facebook page we've maintained for the last couple of years during pre-production.

Now that we're asking for input on actual gameplay elements we'll keep that same spirit of community cooperation in full effect and have built an integrated feedback mechanism and messaging system for robust two-way communication.”

16 Feb 2018 : Steam Early Access Build : Tech Update V 0.61

What's New
* Updated Control Lab: We've been hard at work on a complete rebuild of the character control based partly on feedback from the initial launch. It's a big pivot but it's going well. Check out how that's coming along and give us your feedback on things like speed and jump strength. Still a lot more to do here, but we're probably over the hump.
* Water Update: Big changes to how we render water in Lilygrove and Old Moss Creek. We think new were able to find a great balance between realism and the stylized world we've been building.
* Updated Catacombs Graybox: Take a look at how the architecture on this level is coming along.

What's Next
* Hilltop Camp graybox. When we launched just before Christmas we striated with Old Moss Creek which is technically Act II, Scene I of the entire game. Since then we've been working backwards on level releases and finally we're getting to Act I, Scene I: Hilltop Camp...this is where it all begins.
* GDC March 21-23. Come visit us in the GDC Play section of GDC 21018. We'll be showing a demo of The Scout - probably the Lilygrove Catacombs and the first playable demo of Escape the Gloomer!

26 Jan 2018 : Steam Early Access Build : Content Release V 0.6

What’s New:
* Scent Lab: Redwall is about animals and animals use their noses a lot more than humans. So one of our biggest goals for this game is to have a robust and meaningful scent system. In this release we'll be showing the first iteration of that system including a few use cases for interesting game play. We've still got a ways to go before this is good an tight but we're pretty excited to start letting folks see what we've been working on.
* Updated Lilygrove Chase scene: Since our last release this scene has been fleshed out quite a bit and the main antagonist - Scumsnout is here and ready too ruin your day. This scene isn't finished yet but it's come a long way.
* Catacomb Graybox: Act I, Scene II is set in an ancient underground catacomb. The level will be the first to feature stealth gameplay as a major feature and will introduce rats as a base-level antagonist. Today we're giving an early glimpse of the basic architecture and layout .

What's Next:
* The feedback from the controls lab skewed about 60/40 in favor of a skill-based control scheme as opposed to a more cinematic approach. This means a significant pivot for us but it seems like the right thing to do all things considered. Expect us to rework basic controls in the next couple of builds which will also include updates to previously released levels like Old Moss Creek and the Lilygrove chase scene.
* Look for our next update, hopefully quite soon, to tackle our first pass at reworking the entire control schema...fingers crossed.
* After that, probably another 2-3 weeks, to focus on bugs and performance improvement.

About This Game

The Scout is the first episode in Soma Games' Epic Tales of Redwall. Set in the wildly popular world of best-selling books, Redwall, by Brian Jacques.

Not too far from the storied walls of Redwall Abbey is a small village of mice and moles called Lilygrove. Our hero, Sophia, is the newest member of the Lilygrove Scout Corps, a group of woodland rangers tasked with the protection of the little village and trained in the ancient ways of woodcraft. But her graduation is cut short by the sudden raid from a band of sea rats led by the brutal wearet, Scumsnout. It will take all of her wit and guile to make it out alive and all the way to Redwall to call for help!

The Scout is our first Redwall episode and is a new story that takes place in the middle of winter, about 6 months prior to the events of the book, Redwall. Future episodes tell the tales of three reluctant heroes who each find themselves inside Redwall Abbey for deeply personal reasons when it is besieged by Cluny the Scourge. Thrust into a suddenly dramatic situation the three strangers become fast friends and wind up in a critical, but as-yet unsung role in the events that bring the sword of Martin the Warrior to Matthias and the end to that villain Cluny the Scourge.

As the first episode in the series, The Scout is best understood as a stealth-adventure game set in the winter before the Summer of the Late Rose. It tells the story of a mouse who is driven to Redwall Abbey when sea rats raid the peaceful village of Lilygrove. The events of The Scout play out along the ancient, but now altered, course of the mighty River Moss. What was once a wide river is now the sunken bed of a seasonal creek that that runs east-west between Redwall Abbey and the Great South Stream that feeds the swamps south and east of Salamandastron. The player must find a way through the confusing snow-covered channel punctuated by occasional hedgerows, ancient stone walls, scattered shacks, and the few-and-far-between hearths of friendly woodlanders.

Along the way there is untold adventure to include (of course) feasting, fiddling, and even a few fisticuffs as we meet Valo Scrimpaw, the mysterious stoat who lives in the Winsome Wraith, Scumsnout the murderous weret and the mysterious, ghostly assistance when all seems lost.
