Re-Rebalancing Act

I've made some slight yet important changes to the game in the never-ending quest to achieve perfect balance (and all that jazz).

Starting Bonus Tweaks

I took a good look at which starting bonuses I really never chose much and made them better. So now two of them got a boost:

Attack Power +1 is now Attack Power +2
Magic Defense +2 is now Magic Defense +3

Again, slight but it makes a difference.

Reality Bites

I was looking at my floor event guide and thought: Wouldn't it just plain make more sense if your shovel broke upon the hard icy ground of an Icebox floor? Well now it does. It's a bit more realistic when you think about it.

Monster Boosts

Some monsters also got either an increased chance to use an existing ability or a new ability altogether:

  • Chest Monsters now have an increased chance of casting the SLEEP spell
  • Centiswords now have a chance to POISON on strike
  • Skeleton Warriors now have an ICE magic spell to use

Moolah Mania

And finally, all chest monsters and death boxes got a big boost to how much money they can drop when killed. This should make a pretty big difference if you kill a bunch of them.

A big hello to all our new players brought in from the Summer Sale! In case you haven't already, please check out the game's helpful guides which are.. ah, HELPFUL.

Au revoir!

Super Mega Update!

Oh man, finally!

As some of you may know, I've had a lot of internet connection issues this past week (and in fact am on a borrowed line right now for a few minutes). And I've been waiting to release this big update which will go a long way into making the Widescreen version...

So, what did I do to it?

A redesigned "SELF" screen

This screen has always bugged me and now finally I can say I am completely happy with what it looks like now. Not only are things cooler-looking, like stats are close together now (STR, MAG, DEX, CON) and even a wee bit color-coded. And those colors mean something, folks!

I replaced the STATS screen with the SPECIAL screen

Now bear with me here: Upon further review, I was looking at the game with a more critical eye. I thought that I wanted to make better use of the screen space available, and to do that I wanted to do away with any redundancy where possible. And since your guy's Graveyard file lists stuff like fish caught, items broken, kills and etc. It was sort of stupid to have all this stuff listed on the STATS screen too. Especially since I almost never looked at it while playing over the 1000s of hours or whatever.

Here is the new result:

The SPECIAL screen will show you every effect in play that also doesn't give away andy of the Lantern's hidden powers on the game. So every effect like say Resist Fire will be shown here in text as well.

BUT I went a big step forward with this and ran with it so now this screen also shows the auxially effects from your equipped gear as well! For example, equip a Short bow and now you'll be able to see its bonuses to your Hit and Crit%. Equip too many heavy items with a DEX penalty and you'll be able to see any acrued negatives to your Hit% or chances of running away.

And now you'll all finally get to see stuff that's been in the game the whole time. For example did you guys know that every hammer-class weapon in the game has a +3% chance to land a critical hit? Equip the Putrine dagger and on this screen you'll see that it has an inherrent "Poison damage on strike" effect. Even your starter bonuses can be listed here. All in all, this screen is a huge improvement and I'm looking at it far more than the old one.

Burned Gear Display

But that's not all. Now when your wooden equipped gear gets hit by an enemy fire spell in battle some giant flashing words pop up to warn you that you're now punching things to death. As dumb as it sounds, this should've been in there from the beginning but I never got around to doing it before now.

Bug Fixes

    These have been addressed
  • There was a chance to get a floor load error due to the new map additions I put in the other week. I tested this further and got the same error. There's now a failsafe in case this specific error happens again and this has been tested and works. You should all be good!

  • If you have a cursed helmet equipped the text display is now red like it should've been before.

  • The "NO" icon wasn't showing up on some two handed weapons before. And now it does!

  • Recolored the campfire set & floor spikes so that the browns don't show up on Icebox floor events.

  • Some of the texts were moved around on the shop screens to look better.

Thank You!

And as always I want to thank everybody still playing my game! Between tonight's updates and the recent other improvements (Widescreen, Pack 18) I think this is the very best version of my favorite game I've made. And I'm just happy I was able to borrow this wifi to deliver it all TO YOU!

And now I gotta' get out of this guy's trash cans before I'm discovered!

About This Game

A randomly generated deal, each game is different!

You're a kid. Who's gray. With rabbit ears.

People have been grumbling about the goings-on below town. Seems there's some sort of magic lantern that's throwing the whole joint into chaos. Yeah, that's what I said too! Full of it, they gotta' be, right? Turns out- not so much..

So.. What's it you do again, kid? Warrior? Thief? Wizard? Cleric??!
OH! A lawyer!?

Hahaha, well you sure had me fooled there for a while.. little jerk..

Here's what you're gonna' do: Head below town, JUST FOR ME, and see what the hell that Lantern's on about. They tell me it turns all kinds of colors, and each color changes the rules.

How so!? What am I, an electrician?!?
That's up to you to find out!

And so you did!

Equin: The Lantern is my fun little roguelike with some wholly original ideas. Conquer the 50 floor dungeon and its evil inhabitants in a quest to the bottom of the joint to find the mysterious lantern itself. With features like a turn-based 1st person battle system, Auto Killing weaker enemies, an XP Hit Streak bonus, hundreds of weapons and armor to find, diabolical floor events to shake things up, a lantern who screws with the rules, and oh yeah- PERMADEATH BABY, this is the game for those who like a good challenge.

STRATEGERIZE by slamming doors in your enemy's face to lock them in a room, or lead them into a web and trap their stank @sses. Watch out for stronger champ versions though and much stronger bosses at every turn!

NOTE: This time around I got some help from the fantasic Rocco W and his sick 8-bit tunes! They were so good I decided to scrap all my own music except for the title theme.
