Why Early Access?

“With a fully playable build in place, Early Access offers a fantastic way to get useful feedback at critical times during the remainder of the game's development. It will help steer the game in the direction the community wants it to go. Another benefit is that early adopters get a discounted price and become an important voice in the forums during development.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We anticipate the final build will be available for public release in the first half of 2017. Although this is some time away, please bear in mind that the game will be updated with new content regularly and by the time the full release date comes around, the Early Access build will practically be the full version. We won't release the game until we feel we are bug free, fully optimized, and have addressed as many areas of interest to the community as we are able.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of the game will be complete with many more tracks and cars, plus new graphics embellishments, a crowd system, track officials, and more. It will also include more Steam specific features, like Achievements, Leaderboards, etc. Your support during the Early Access period will play a critical role in bringing all of this together. We hope to have a racing game that can be enjoyed by the widest possible audience.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The build we have ready for Early Access currently has the core elements of the single player campaign and two tracks that you can play under different weather, visibility, and day/night conditions. The build is stable, reasonably well optimized, and the AI and handling feel pretty solid. New tracks and cars will continue to be added as we move toward a final release.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Although a final retail price has not been fully determined, it will be more expensive if you wait until full release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will be actively using the Community forums to listen to feedback and get a sense for what the community wants. We can then prioritize certain elements of development to better create the experiences that our players are looking for. Over time, we'll update our development road map detailing what will be coming and when. We'll of course be using Steam's Community features to keep everyone up to date on the game's progress and to answer any questions people may have. Please feel to drop by our hub any time.”

GI Racing 2.0 Status

Hey Guys,

First of all, let me apologize for the very slow response and the lack of recent updates. I'll have more to say on that in a moment, but let me also state right upfront that, despite appearances, this is not a dead or abandoned project. We have already put a fair amount of work into it after our last set of updates and we very much want to continue working on it.

Here's the basic situation. When we went into early access, we were hoping for a little more initial funding than we got out of the gate. Having never done this before, we really were not sure what to expect or the best way to go about promoting it. We gave out lots of free keys to people promising to do reviews and promote the game, but with one or two exceptions, we got nothing back in return. I guess we got scammed for some keys :) Oh well, it turns out this is a more common phenomena than we knew about, but such is life. We'll know better for next time and can share this experience with our students as part of the learning curve.

Like I said, unfortunately, the game didn't really generate enough early sales to allow us to bring in the extra help we needed to finish it in a more timely fashion, so we're going in a different direction. We've been putting together the makings of a crowdfunding campaign, not just for GI Racing 2.0, but to fund a number of other projects we have in development at Game Institute. In the next few weeks we'll have some more information about what's happening with that, but we hope to be able to raise the funds to put this project back on the front burner. To pay the bills, we've had to focus more on course development these last couple of months, but we really do want to get some updates out here as well. If we're successful in our attempts to raise a bit of scratch, we'll be right back in action.

To be clear, I'm certainly not asking you guys to pay more or anything like that; I just wanted to bring everyone up to speed on what we're trying to do to get this game back on the right track. If you could help us spread the word around when the time comes, that would be awesome, but that's totally your call of course.

We had obviously hoped to be much further along on this project than we currently are, and we're very sorry for letting it go so long without an update. We really want to wrap this project up as soon as possible and will do the best we can to get it fast tracked.
