What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We've gotten to a vital point in development where Early access and the input of the Steam community will enable us to create the most enjoyable and refined game experience possible. It’s very important for us to have the ability to communicate proposed changes and additions and be sure whatever we’re doing benefits the experience of our player-base.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan on releasing the full and complete version of Babel within roughly the space of 2-4 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The complete version of Babel will include a range of exciting features we can’t wait to implement and see what you, the community, think. Here’s a small list of the tasks and inclusions we will be dedicating our time to up to release:
- A level editor with steam workshop sharing support allowing players to create their own abstract and challenging puzzles to try and outwit their friends with.
- More block types, to help diversify puzzles and player experience.
- More game modes and level types such as an insane upcoming ‘Defend the tower’ mode.
- Ensuring a high level of polish is applied to all of Babel’s content.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“While there is a lot we can’t wait to add to the world of Babel, in its current state the title is functional, playable and hugely enjoyable. We've had some great feedback from our local community & other developers who've played the game, and we hope you find it just as fun as they did!

Babel’s current build features dozens of perplexing and entertaining stages, smooth gameplay & mechanics that make full use of room-scale VR and physical interaction, making a very immersive experience, topped off with a vast range of dialogue from the hilarious and very talented Mark Whitten.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No, once Babel is complete and leaves Early Access the price will remain the same.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“A vital aspect that will help Babel grow and develop into the best it could possibly be is the direction of development we take from the feedback of you, the community. We will be fully utilising Steam Discussions and soaking up suggestion & keeping every comment in mind when implementing future updates all while maintaining constant contact with our playerbase.
We would particularly be looking for and appreciate feedback on:
-If you believe something should be done to make puzzles more engaging and enjoyable.
Babel’s art style.
- Achievement ideas.
- Mechanic tweaks & polish.
- If you have any particularly unique or crazy ideas for block pieces?
- If you have any general graphical or audio issues.
- Any bugs you encounter.”

1.2 "The Holiday Update" Released! Holiday World, Performance improvements & more!

Gameplay & Content:
  • Holiday world added!
    • Play all the levels you love on a new, holiday themed world! Featuring Christmas Trees, Candy canes, Glowing lights, Snow, Santa Hats for all your worshipers & more!
  • Level select now has the option to change the world you play levels on, support for multiple level playlists (for now, this is just the main game & the tutorial playlist, more to come soon!)
  • We use a 'cartridge' system for this, to select a playlist, simple put that level cartridge into the console in the level select. To override the world, put one of the world override "cheat cartridges" in first, then the playlist into that!
  • Bomb blocks are now slightly harder to set off, as if your tracking is a tad shaky, they'd feel like they were on hair triggers!
  • The tutorial levels have been scaled down slightly, to match the playspace requirements of the rest of the game! Previously they were about 20% larger than the actual levels, making them hard to play if you have a small play area, sorry about that! :)

Graphics
  • Rendering overhaul, resulting in much better graphical performance.
  • All rendering has been switched out from deferred rendering to forward rendering. Anti-aliasing current does not work due to this, but should be back in the next update! The end result of this though, is things should perform better, and you can turn up the super sampling! :)
  • Now uses single pass rendering, resulting in a big graphical performance improvement!
  • Now uses forward mesh-based decals, instead of deferred decals
  • Fog & lighting tweaks to most levels
  • Minor colour grading to levels so they look nicer!
  • Optimized various models, shaders & more.

Improvements:
  • Controls now shown on the level selection screen. Kinda temp for now, will probably replace them with something nicer later!
  • Controller weapon offset now removed by default
  • Controller ghosting on by default
  • Settings:
    • Settings menu improved!
    • Now has nicer buttons for adjusting settings.
    • Adding settings for:
      • Super sampling (Be careful you don't set this too high and ruin your FPS though! ;) )
      • Volume
      • By popular request, controller visiblity, offsetting & ghosting
    • Better play space scaling settings in options
    • Adding settings caps to the options menu
  • Adjusted timing of various voice clips so they happen at more reasonable times
  • Settings now have reasonable caps.

Bug Fixes:
  • Fixed a bug where it was possible to drop or lose your hands, phew!
  • Fixed some duplicated level IDs. Stats should track properly for all levels now!
  • Fixed physics settings that caused some weapons to move in a volitile manner if the framerate fell below 90fps
  • Fixed a bug where some tutorial voice lines wouldn't play
  • Also fixed a bug where some tutorial voice lines could play twice!
  • Fixed a bug where the level select intro voice line wouldn't play
  • Fixed some tree placement issues & lighting issues
  • Fixed some issues with construction level #2
  • Fixed an issue with the fog on the pre-game menu
  • Fixed some misc issues with voice lines
  • Misc bug fixes

Misc Changes:
  • Now updated to unity 5.5
  • Updated SteamVR and NewtonVR
  • Refraction effects have been removed from all shaders (ice blocks, water, etc), as these were quite expensive for performance.
  • Adjusted volume of some voice lines (Disappointed! line)
  • Minor improvements to the tutorial
  • Minor adjustments have been made to the first tutorial level to make it a bit more comfortable to play.

About This Game

What Is Babel: tower to the Gods?

It's a charming physics based puzzle game designed around room-scale VR for the HTC Vive, which will test your coordination and wits, as you battle physics while working out how to de-construct part of a tower (to the gods).

You'll have to approach the towers from every angle walk, crouch, and even possibly jump, using a range of divine tools & weaponry to carefully disassemble & thoroughly check the stability of each unique and bizarre monument built before you, all while protecting the sacred totem, to ensure it's safety for it's worshippers!

There's a variety of different types of puzzles in it, requiring a range of different skills - precision, logic, speed & more!
Examples:
  • Precision - Using careful movements of your Vive controllers, slide a sword between blocks and push out blocks whilst narrowly avoiding the volatile and explosive bomb blocks, which will detonate with the slightest of your touch!
  • Logic - Work out the correct order & method of deconstruction! Knock out blocks simultaneously to keep the tower balance! Or, is there a large amount of blocks ontop of a slippery ice block? Give it a fast & hard whack from the side to sent it quickly sliding out of the tower without the blocks ontop falling off!
  • Speed - Some towers may contain blocks that are being burnt away! Once these blocks finish burning, they'll be reduced to ash & disappear! Solve the tower fast enough that these burning blocks don't cause it to topple!

We'll be adding more block types, features & even new game-modes in the future! So an eye on those change logs to see what's new!

System Requirements

    Minimum:
    • OS: Windows 7
    • Processor: Intel i5-4590
    • Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 970
    • Storage: 400 MB available space
