About This Game

And So It Was is a mouse-driven top-down action adventure game with randomized elements to keep things fresh every time you play.
You are the Boy, who escapes captivity and goes through unique areas fighting (or avoiding) enemies while trying to figure out how and why he was imprisoned in the first place.

Key Features

  • Mouse-driven gameplay inspired by old-school RPGs and RTSs.
  • Randomly generated levels, each with more to explore than the previous one.
  • You get one life to tackle the challenge (a.k.a. permanent death).
  • Unique combat mechanics: the more damage you take, the less damage you inflict.
  • Alter the way you play: Make deals so your damage comes from your missing stamina, inflict and take double damage, or pay the price of magic with your stamina...
  • Piece together the lore throughout the game. You might not get all of it on the first run, but you’ll want to play again to get the whole story.
  • Voice-acted narration that doesn't interrupt gameplay.
  • Good old secret areas that are... well, secret.

If this is an action-combat game, the controls shouldn't be so freakin' awkward. This might be playable with a controller, but the click-to-move scheme isn't conducive to combat where your first mistake pretty much ends your game.
If this is a stealth game, enemies shouldn't be able to see/hear you through walls when you're standing still or sneaking.
If this is a roguelike, there should be tactical decisions deeper than roll-past-enemy-and-hope-you-don't-get-hit-even-ONCE.

I'm sorry, but I couldn't figure out how to play this game the way it wanted me to play it - and neither the gameplay itself nor the atmosphere could compel me to struggle through.
Unforgiving combat + inaccurate control + non-functional stealth = fail.

Oh boy so where so I start...
I normally don't do steam reviews but this games needs em because it not as popular as it deserves to be.
Positive aspects are many,Let me start by saying give this game a chance its full of charm and passion. The "levels" all have really strong themes and thus result in an really immersive ambience. Some people say they dont like the narrator, personally I like him its a nice change of pace from the typical [old guy or old guy with vocal fry] he is very fitting to the games environment and the lines are varied enough that after you have died for the 20th time in a row he dose not become annoying. The game also has a HUGE learning curve, mostly as a result of learning how to approach->dodge->attack->dodge->attack->dodge->attack enemies until they faint/dematerialize,after couple of hours playing you'll start to get the hang of it.While still on the topic of difficulty yes this game is very hard but because of the procedurally generated levels and wide range of narrated lines it takes A LOT of dying in this game to make you rage quit (see 2nd half) even then you'll want to come back to try again, because unlike most "hard" modern games you dont feel like your being cheated by the AI (looking at you modern Driving and FPS games).

The only real critique I have of this game are 2 things...
1:The Boy's attack speed NEEDS to be faster then it currently is.I know this game is about stacking your actives and passives but his stock ATK speed is just too slow and it really gets highlighted when taking on more then one enemy at once or during the boss battles (Guardians). But I think altering this will fix the 2nd critique i have.
2:The Guardians are stupid hard, like seriously each of them are like an end of game boss.Im not saying the shouldn't be easy (I like that they are not) but they should not be this hard either.

All in all this game has TONS of ♥♥♥♥ing charm, its hard but in a good way,99% flawless and if the developer keeps working at it with patches and such it could be slated to win a couple of indie game awards; It is most definitely worth your time (and a few of your bucks).

This game is pretty challenging, but the procedurally generated dungeons keep it quite interesting. Also, the voice that narrates the game is right on point. I enjoyed it.

This game is awesome!

I found myself playing hours upon hours trying to find out what comes next.
The gameplay is fun and super challenging.
The levels being generated in a new way each time really adds to the replay value.
The music and voice acting is amazing and the whole atmosphere of the game really had me immersed!

There are only minor problems such as the horizontal spike trap hallway damaging you sometimes even when the spikes are retracted, or the walking animation not stopping when you are blocked by something.

But apart from those two things I can only say good things about this very cute game! Overall polish is great.

A completely bug free game, with a relaxing calm and quite beautiful animation contrasted by the difficulty of the non saveable story mode. If you like challenges, this is the game for you.

A tough, but rewarding game. If you can take permadeath and love a challenge, this is a great game for you! The randomly generated levels make each playthrough completely unique, with fresh challenges and mazes.

Also, completely bug-free. This game is perfect! Love it.

It seemed like a pretty cool game for the few minutes I played it. It's well done and the movement and fighting were good.

Unfortunately, I didn't pay enough attention to the store page to notice that it was permadeath. I no longer have the patience to keep starting over and requested a refund, but if you are ok with permadeath, it is fun for the price.

A challenging game with simple combat mechanics and a rather vast list of random modifiers that can be obtained throughout the maps. Encourages the player to think before rushing in. The game seemed hard at first but did not take long to get accustomed to. If you like old school games that have a simple but challenging gameplay, this is one that you should atleast try.

I don't play games so much these days so this was a bit difficult at first. The game is cool when you get used to the controls.

Very good game indeed. I suck at reaction speed so I died....alot. This happens to me in most games but unlike other games I didn't feel like quiting and giving up. Despite dying (lots) it was enjoyable and made we want to keep trying. Addictive as hell infact. I love the different spells you collect, I love that you can sneak up on enemies which actually makes it a skillful game rather than hack n slash. A nice game that will probably go under most peoples radar. My advice to the devs will be to get youtubers involved. I had been following this game for a while when I found it on Steam Greenlight but not a single youtube video can be found when put into the seach engine.

Fun, funny, delightfully indie, challenging.
Combat feels clumsy at first, but you pick up the nuisances with time, and the spell and passive and deals diversity makes up for it. I couldn't get the whole "sneaking" business going though.
I think that if the developer will keep adding features and content with future updates, this game could become huge.
