BlackShadows is a survival horror game. You'll assume the role of a young scientist who is fighting against her most terrifying nightmare. Explore creepy rooms, keep your cool in the strangest of atmospheres, and make sure to find all the keys if you want to escape before it's too late! Are you brave enough to venture further? This is your one warning: Stay away from Black Shadows...

"Super game! I love the atmosphere! First game I’ve rated a 5. Great Job 😀"
From Karakins Games on Gamejolt

"Awesome game! the atmosphere is really amazing! 😀 5/5 Great job!"
From Poweryan on Gamejolt

"This is a pretty fun horror game. Batteries are key because if you run out of light you are totally boned! It adds to the tension that the flashlight dies so fast. You just have to run headlong into each and every terrifying hallway because hesitation means less flashlight power. It's well worth the $3"
From Evilpeopleinc on Desura

"Game looks amazing! The atmosphere is tense...I like it. Can't wait!. "

This game is bad.
The gameplay is bad. The graphic is maybe. Not too scary because if you have battery you won't die. But you can't fint a lot of battery and you can't run faster.

This is probably one of the worst games I've ever played. So basically your main goal is to wander through these same-ish looking hallways searching for keys to open these 5 vault door while also trying to keep your flashlight from running out of batteries because then you basically die. The "horror" aspect of this game is basically non-existent. A slenderman looking figure flashes in front of you once and the sound of a woman screaming and text popping up on screen telling you you're next are basically the only "horror" elements in the game besides the darkness, which I'm going to get into. This game is dark as ♥♥♥♥. Without your flashlight most of the game is literally pitch black. You can't change your gamma and try and make out a picture, no, it is literally a black screen.

Now let's go over the cons and cons.

-Gameplay is boring and repetitive
-flashlight mechanic is broken (when my flashlight was off the battery still was being used)
-Sound design is terrible; Your footstep loop is real short and repetitive and it really got on my nerves since that is basically the only thing you hear for the majority of the game
-The game is short, about 20 minutes long. (Thought about making this a pro because honestly, I wouldn't want to play it any longer)
-Horror elements are weak
-story is barebones
-Room/Hallway design is really repetitive
-No save system, although it's really short so it shouldn't be a problem unless you quit which bring me to the next point
-No options menu, pushing esc exits the game.
-When you die, you start right back at the beginning. All the doors you opened remain open, but you have to walk all the way back to the part you were at and hope you don't run out of batteries because the pickups don't respawn

I could probably list a few more cons but I don't want to think about this game ever again. Don't buy this game, DON'T.

Simply put, the game doesn't work for me.

I got a key for the game on a bundle of mystery games, then decided to give it a try despite all the negative reviews, since I'm a fan of horror games.

I start up the game and after the two logos that come up, the entire game is black. I can't see anything. Meanwhile the character is talking and explaining the story. If I walk, I can hear the footsteps, so the black screen isn't normal. I try restarting the game, doesn't work. Reinstalling the game, doesn't work. I look around for solutions, nothing. I run the game again and start trying using TAB and the console key to see if I can do anything and, somehow, using the console actually temporarily solves the problem, so I can actually see stuff.

When the character is done talking, the game's logo comes up, then the controls and it gives me a "press space to start" message. I press space - nothing, controls are still on screen. Once more, I can hear footsteps if I walk, but the screen is stuck. Meanwhile the flashlight is draining away. Fiddling with TAB and the console doesn't work this time. Eventually the character dies because the flashlight ran out of battery. I press R to restart and it's right back to being stuck on the screen showing the controls.

I restart the game and try everything again. Exactly the same: had to fiddle with TAB and the console to get the screen to work during the intro, then I get stuck on the screen with the controls.

And from what I've read around, I'm not an exception - this seems to happen to quite a number of people. Also, reading other reviews reveals it's an incredibly short game with little to no challenge and that's barely scary at all.

So, in short, this is a game that shouldn't be sold. If people can play a good horror game like Black Rose for free, why would anyone pay for a game that might not work and, when it does, it's not actually good?

Well at least I can say that steam is now offcially dead if it wasn't before, also piece of advice: you can't drink the bleach from the purple containers so bring some with you and send this to people that you hate.

I'm not sure if my review is valid, considering i couldn't play the game. My screen was frozen on the control menu. I would like to take this as an opportunity to assume the game was amazing, and remain ignorant.

I got this game in a random 10 game package for $2 USD, which means I spent $.20 on it. Still overpriced.

A first person view horror game, with lame jump scares.

you have a flashlight that needs batteries, you also need to find keys to unlock doors.

if your flashlight runs out, you will die and respawn at the beginning.
but your progress is NOT lost, so just run quickly back from where you died last..

Keys and batteries does not respawn.
the gameplay is about 15-20 minutes

I do recommand turning your flashlight off when possible,
Do not pick up the Yellow batteries if you don't need them !
you can't stack them. and there aren't many in the game.
pressing ESC closes the game, and there is no save option.

Surprise, surprise! Someone made yet another cheap, lazy-arsed "horror" game, and is now asking money for it on Steam. And surprise, surprise! Some ♥♥♥♥-head wasted $1.79 USD to find out just how bad it was.

So how bad is it? Well, actually, I've played worse. But I've also played much, much, MUCH better. Let's be specific: The graphics aren't TOO bad, even if they're extremely repetitive and I couldn't work out how to get them out of windowed mode (lack of an Options screen can do that to ya). The sound is generally rather good, if you excuse the appalling, got-my-girlfriend-to-do-it (she's studying Drama atm) nature of the voice acting, and the fact that your echoing footsteps sound like a rhino stampeding through a very dry, very narrow and seemingly endless length of sewer piping. The infrequent jump scares are admittedly effective (lights suddenly exploding, that kinda thing), but any good herein is easily outdone by the fact that you are apparently being pursued by a completely silent and unseen antagonist, whose presence is only confirmed by on-screen statements such as "he is here", and the fact that you die when you run out of battery power and get a suitably explanatory "game over" screen to say that "he" finally caught up with you. Which happened to me mostly because I spent a while walking around in circles, only to end up back at the door I was looking for a key to, at which time I was informed that "he" had stolen the key and I now had to find SOMETHING ELSE to open said door with! Gee whiz, thanks for that, glad I wasted all my battery power looking around for a key and ABSOLUTELY ♥♥♥♥-ALL ELSE, because that's what the game had TRAINED me to do up to that point, at the expense of ignoring anything else bar - you guessed it - BATTERIES!!!

Outlast has a lot to answer for. Not least of all the fact that almost every ♥♥♥♥ing game that attempts to "emulate" it sucks DYING DOG'S TESTACLES. Here's to the next half-arsed "horror" title (due any day now, methinks). You'd think I'd learn, but alas, the temptation to be one of the top two or three reviews on an otherwise barren Store page is just too beguiling for me. Ever notice how these kinds of games get a dozen or so of us early-worm suckers to post reviews on them, then NOBODY EVER BUYS OR REVIEWS THEM EVER AGAIN?! That's an awful lot of failed aspiring game designers out there, don'tcha think? There must be a plague of distraught mothers, especially in Europe, who think they're gonna barge in on their teenage sons having a wank, but alas...

Oh well, at least the heavy-duty ceiling fan they installed just a month ago didn't go to waste.

Verdict: 3.5/10.

As soon as I noticed the typo inconsistency in the title I knew there was something wrong with the game. Not to mention the trailer in the store page which is in fact a compilation of Let's Play footage taken from Youtube.

As I launch the game my greatest fears were confirmed : BlackShadows doesn't have any menu. Instead of opening on the title screen the game throws you directly into gameplay, where the scary part actually ends...

Basically, the game consist of making your way through a dark maze-like environment with your flashlight. Since batteries in indie horror games can't last longer than any generic brand batteries sold at Walmart, you'll have no choice but to pickup new ones every two minutes.

In addition, the game features only one level and it lasts no longer than 20 minutes. Once you get at the end of the game you will feel no sense of accomplishment since nothing explains what you have actually done to solve the mystery behind the paranormal phenomenon that afflicts the whole humanity.

To conclude, BlackShadows aka Black Shadows is nothing else but another indie game that tries to cow milk on the success of great horror games such as Amnesia and Outlast (let's not talk about Slender, please). Considering its short lenght the 5$ price tag just feels like a total rip-off. Even though I bought the game while it was on sale I still think it wasn't worth my money.

If you have 12 minutes, you can watch my whole playthrough below :

P.S.: Is it just me or the narrator has a French Canadian accent?

>1st time playing
>game opens in window mode
>press esc to get to options
>game closes
>start game 2nd time
>story goes on as I move through the level
>after 1-2 minutes of walking I reach a door
>press e on it then it shows me the controls(very intuitive)
>stuck at controls screen for 2 minutes bc pressing space didn't work
>somehow something kills me and I have to respawn
>respawn, same control screen,still stuck
>Close game, open it 3rd time
>Story goes on but the screen is black
>open console, write exit
10/10 the console is magnific.

There's only one way to die in BlackShadows and that is to let your flashlight batteries run out. And I do mean 'let' because there's enough of them lying around to power a shuttle launch.

Your average Kindle book requires more interaction than this. There are five doors to open, the keys to which lie varying distances away through linear corridors. There is no threat. There's no menu. There's two scares where a light blows out and a lightning crash illuminates your would-be adversary in a corridor but neither of them affect anything you're doing. Listening to the opening/closing narration takes almost half as long as it does to beat the game. Utterly, inarguably pointless.

Yes, this is another negative review, but I'm going to point out 'why' it is a bad game.

First off, when launching this "game" you are just greeted with a voice that is drowned out by piano music. No subtitles or anything. "Oh well letme press ESC and see if there are any options." closes. No interface to change your options.

When it comes to the "horror" part, this is a poor, POOR excuse of a horror game. Basically, there is only two jumpscares, one during the story and one when it's game over. The rest of the horror part is just long, dark hallways and text pop-ups of how you're the next victim.

Gameplay? Not much of a gameplay. All you do is just look for keys to open vault doors. That's it. Not joking. No interaction with anything else. This game only took me around 15 mins to complete.

This game is a good example of how NOT to make a horror game. Trust me, this review just described the whole game here.

Poorly made walking/scary game, containing 3 (in total) jumpscares (not really scary).
Voice acting is a failure.
No menu.
Story is garbage (this short review is already longer than this game plot xD).

Completing takes about 15 minutes.
Don't waste your money on this "game".
Even if discounted.

The publisher should go out, find all the copies, bury them in the darkest place known to man, leave it there and never speak of it again.

The best part of the whole game was when I pressed the button "esc"

Ze heavily azzented girl talks about black shadows while the piano is very loud and I nearly fall azleep. Zen ze game starts and I run around in badly textured samish looking corridors without any reazon. Zen zhere's a door. I look around and find the key. I open ze door. Behind the door are more boring corridors and I still don't have a clue why the hell I zhould bother to play any minute longer. I zwitch ze game off and delete all local content. Ze end.

P.S. Don't press Esc.

P.P.S. Really, don't press it.

A joke game !
This is not worth more then free ,and the game it is i think 3$ ...not acceptable
Thank God I got it for free.
But this game is more like a test game or a test lvl than a full game. There is absolutely 0 invorement sound and like effects ,and this is UN4 ppl not unity it is just not acceptable to make a game like this !! Only soud in the game is your anoying OMG!!!!!!! anoying Footsteps over and over and over again ,and opening of the door ,and 3-4 the worst jumpscares i ever seen !
There is no MENU or settings for the game waht so ever no resolution and audio -0 for that. When you pres ESC the game closes.
You need at list for resolution to go to find some file in side the game and there to chance resolution manualy ... a joke
At least the game is nicely working good on 60 fps,no drops ,maybe 1 or 2 times drop to like 58-59 when you open the dore, only positive thing ,the rest is a joke of a game
Play it only if you get it for free and only if you love short inde game !
