1. open the game
2.realise the game is made with unity
3.start the ''campaing'
4. see a camp fire and some bad made trees
5. try to find out how to change the sensitivity
6. try to find out what to do in this unity made app
7. (someone leave some batteries in the forest)
8. Try to find something horror (you will fail)
I appreciate the work that the developers did, but... that is not enough

A minefield you can traverse by running round the back of it, an on-rails boat ride and a train station with two rooms. Push some pillars around, run to a generator and it's goodnight, god bless.

Granted, I didn't explore every inch of the map but then I'm guessing the developer didn't either because I fell through it twice.

Save yourself a playthrough and watch mine.

This ultra low budget horror adventure game starts out with you having crashed your truck in the forest, upon where you immediately find a note (personally addressed to you!) from some dark forest lord named The Keeper, telling you to leave or else. However, he's kind enough to let you know in precise detail that the generator beyond the river is where he harnesses his power, but you'll never stop him anyway because you don't have the gas can, key and cable to get the generator running.

No kidding, that's what he says in his note.

I spent about 30 minutes ambling around a hideously ugly forest that mostly consists of dirt and a sparse few PS1-era trees, picking up giant battery packages to keep my flashlight running and avoiding land mines seemingly drawn in MS Paint before I decided I had enough of this game. If you tried Nyctophobia for free you'd probably be angry at the time wasted in downloading and playing it, never mind spending a fiver for this dubious privilege.

It should also be noted that this evil spirit of the forest and darkness wrote his sinister warning message on spiral bound notebook paper. Perhaps "The Keeper" is short for "The Trapper Keeper."

I knew from the trailer that the graphics weren't exactly next gen but this is really bad. It looks like a game for windows 95. I could look past that if it had good atmosphere or gameplay or was actually scary. So far none of these are the case. I've only played the game a little bit but I have a pretty good idea of the game's overall potential. I'll update my review if the game gets better but I dont' think i'll be able to tolerate too much more of this.

Category Score Comment
Fun/Horror 1/4 It is difficult to review a game that has as many problems as this. There is no fun to be had and the few jump scares present in the game do not justify the time spent
1/4 There is almost no attempt to provide an immersive horror experience, and the controls/gameplay continually detract from enjoying what limited gameplay is present.
Graphics 1/4 2D sprites and circa 2000 graphics in a 3D game written in 2015 represent laziness, poor design decisions, or a simple lack of competence that treads dangerously close to designer maleficence
Sound 1/4 When the sound actually works, it is ham-fisted. In terms of music, I am a big fan of Kevin MacLeod, but his compositions are wasted here (and as another reviewer pointed out, at least credit the guy properly!)
Replayability 1/4 I couldn’t even finish the game the first time and have no desire to play this game ever again.

Overall = 25% - The lowest score I can give to a game that actually loads and runs at least once. I don’t even feel like giving a snarky comment here. Just don’t give this game any of your time.

This game is quite the tragedy. Apparently you die if your flashlight dies. And apparently your flashlight can drain newly packaged pack of duracell batteries in like 30 seconds. Then apparently you're in a forest that happens to have newly packaged 4packs of AA batteries. Does this flashlight even use AA?

Collision on the game was quite bad, kept running into trees being wider than they are. Then the last zone of the game isn't even part of the map. Maybe my map needs lighting.

I recommend you to avoid this game, the graphics, sound, and gameplay are horrendous.
The game itself feels extremely outdated and poorly optimized.
It took me quite a bit to get familiar with the map due to the poor map system.
It's a pretty bad attempt at a survival horror game.

Steam has dropped it's quality control over the past months and again this game is a clear proof of that. Nyctophobia offers little to nothing to my personal interest while poorly taking elements from other similar games in the same genre. The game uses Unity, so graphics-wise you can't expect anything very pretty. Length wise it lasts about 30 minutes, which has an annoying perma-death throughout most of the game. Does it make it challenging? Yes. Is it entertaining? No.

The only difficulty in this game is literally finding batteries which last about 30 seconds. The mechanics are complete nonsense. Honestly I can't even call this a horror game. The only horror element is darkness, therefore you have a flashlight. There's no jumpscares, there's barely any creatures at all to scare you. All you get is a shadow thing that doesn't appear until the end section who calls himself the Keeper, you get a weird zombie sitting on a table who gets an epileptic attack when you enter said house, also he doesn't attack you. Oh and who could forget the skeleton on the end of the boat section that is downright laughable. I'm usually very sensible to horror and find myself getting scared with the most little things even in the worst games, but this one had absolutely nothing, honestly it doesn't even try to scare you.

I feel like this game is also missing any sense of proportion at all. Sometimes things like ladders are just too big, it feels like the game character is a midget sometimes. As I've stated, the main game last 30 minutes at most, the story makes no sense but since it's a horror game that's totally okay. The sound effects and soundtrack are so out of place, sometimes there's a music building up to... nothing.

There's also another game mode that you get after beating the main one, it's called Own the Night. It adds about more 10 minutes of gameplay where you turn on some lights and kill zombies with the lights. The zombies (which are just a person fully painted in black with a worker jacket) sounds make the worst zombie sound I've ever heard in a game, ever. They literally sound like ghosts effects from a children's movie or something.

The negatives obviously beat the positives in this game, if you get Nyctophobia for free, try it out and get some laughs of it, but don't think about spending money on this game. 2/10.

Easy to 100%

Graphics on the screenshots is not great, but in-game it's somehow much worse.
Glitches, fall through map couple of times. Luckily there is no fall damage.

Generic horror on Unity. Technicaly it's actualy better than some others but yet not good enough.

A basic game from 25 years ago, except that instead of fitting on a floppy disk it's 4 times the size of Max Payne.
Not worth downloading.

The main game was so bad it almost wasn't worth the easy achievements. The mini game you unlock by beating the main game was actually far more fun (mostly due to the fact that you can actually hold shift to run in the mini game)

The gameplay is boring and bad. And the game not scary. The graphic is good but not everywhere. You can do achievements.
And you can get trading cards.

This was overall ok. I actually use unity and some of the things they messed up on could easily have been fixed. First I'll give a brief overview. Basically this game's premise is you die if your flashlight goes out so pick up batteries and explore.

3/10 is my current score.

The music is ok. It makes it seem more suspensful.

The minefield and final scene had engaging gameplay of a reasonable difficulty.

The cutscenes were done well.

There isn't a clear threat that keeps on your feet. Which can make it feel boring and not at all scary. I mean there's the fact that you pick up batteries but that is pretty much never a problem.

I don't see a way to save. Don't really hold it against you though because I know that's not the easiest thing to do in unity.

The mouse sensitivity is insanely high with no way to alter it. I find this a weird problem to have since you can download a free fully working fps controller off the asset store.

I do not like the use of ambient light since it removes the immersion.

The flashlight. Put the spot light on the camera. This may seem a little weird to have light shining out of your player's eyes but trust me it works so much better. Right now your have the light like below the flashlight or something. It can mess it up because the light will clip inside things.

I wish the game made it more clear I could drown. Although I probably should've read "how to play"

It's super short. Like hour max.

All the small things that weren't fixed are what ruin this game but overall it makes a decent horror game. I assume this is one of their first games but it came out ok. Is it worth buying? Yeah no. If I was this developer I would've released this for free because then at least you could go back improve on what you did bad on from reviews and release a priced game of a higher quality that people would actually want to buy.

Note: I got this on tremor (if i don't have this it get's censored) games so I didn't spend real money on this.
