About This Game

Summary
The Adventures of Mr. Bobley is a 3d platformer adventure game featuring physics based puzzles and challenges that also require you to drive vehicles and operate heavy machinery. Set at a skyscraper construction site, the game’s goal is to climb ever higher and higher. The game is all about physics and interaction with the environment.

Character
Mr. Bobley is just your average construction worker who arrives to work in the morning only to find intricate puzzles to solve. He has to prove his skills in a hazardous construction site environment. To advance in the game he has to figure out how to use various kinds of construction machinery to his advantage.

Game mechanics
While the game looks almost like a 2d platformer, the character can walk in any direction. The camera view is locked overlooking the scene at a constant angle. Even when driving vehicles the camera angle remains unchanged. To aid the player in orienting themselves in 3d space, small graphical help is provided in the form of a jump distance indicator and a picture-in-picture window.

Levels
There are 24 levels in the game. Each level has several puzzles that you need to solve in order to advance to the next puzzle. Level design can be quite complex because there are usually multiple floors in one level. Higher floors become transparent to prevent blocking the player’s view. Nonetheless, the player always knows where to go because the exit is always to the right and upwards. This is yet another game mechanic taken from classic platformer games.

Puzzles
All puzzles are based on physics interaction with the environment. You have to drive cars, trucks, fork-lifts and tipping lorries. Use cranes and elevators to push, haul, lift and transport objects as necessary to overcome challenges and get obstacles out of the way. You also need to build bridges and make stairways. There are also various minigames like maze puzzle, escape run, even a soccer match.

kind of a kiddish puzzler but they can be good from time to time. Pretty sure I got this one free, but I can’t be certain with all the bundles in the past.
This is a miss. The graphics are ok. The gameplay style is ok. But the controls are horrendous. I played through the first 3 or so levels and it was so cumbersome and irritating that I had to quit. I think I played a quarter of an hour. In one instance you are supposed to roll into a ball and fall down this chute but the controls are so wonky I somehow bounced out of it like 3 times in a roll. I’m pretty sure Marble Madness that I had on my Apple IIgs back in 1988 had better controls than this.

Boring puzzle platformer. The jumping is awful and jerky, and you can't tell where you're going to jump. Forced to use terrible controls of page up/page down and left control. Says controller support yet doesn't work. Most of the puzzles don't really make sense. Theres no direction to the game, you just wander around the same looking construction sides operating machiney. All this would still make it a very mediocre game. The problem is the bugs and the glitches. Dozens of times I had to restart levels bc a vehicle flipped over and couldn't be turned upside down. Also the vehicle would clip through walls and railing and wouldn't be able to get unstuck. If you stand on a vehicle while going up and elevator it starts freaking out and moving around and flipping over for no reason. This lack of polish when the game has been out for over a year is unacceptable. Forcing to restart constantly bc the game still feels like a beta doesn't make this game worth playing.

3/10.

First impression after 16 levels: annoying physics puzzler/3D platformer.

Please note that most positive reviews have rather short play times; only 3% of players even got the first achievement or finished the game, and judging by the "Global Leaderboard" here on Steam, those are 12 (twelve) players in all. Why is that? Isn't the game aimed at children familiar with "Bob the Builder"?
Well, in theory that's the case, but in practice the game suffers from its unpredictable physics; if you had hoped for a sandbox-y experience, there's little opportunity of that, and the game does punish exploration by making you drop through the floor or otherwise fail in many "wtf" ways.

Sop you follow the obvious path through a level (which is most often the only path the camera angles actually allow you to see), doing the obvious forklifting/craning, with obstinate controls (rotating crane control is especially weird: instead of rotating the crane and moving the trolley, you move the position of the hook up/down/left/right, which can result in some erratic movements). Stacking crates one atop the other with the forklift is practically impossible; it works when the base is wide, i.e. one crate rests on two others. Sort of. Stuff just goes wrong or behaves unexpectedly a lot.

The physics interactions in this game are quite few; if the devs had not gone with a general physics engine, but written code for these interactions separfately "oldschool" style, the game would have been a lot better. Crates and vehicles don't need to topple over. The crane hook doesn't need to swing around at the end of "fake" cable. The physics code should've allowed the player to execute a solution plan in a predictable fashion. Currently, that's just not the case.

So who is the target audience for this game? It can't be small children because of the wonky contrrols (no gamepad support) ; it can't be puzzle players because the puzzles are easy; it can't be physics game fans because experimenting with the physics in this game is rarely rewarding.

Get this if you like games that are sort of weird and sort of bad and sort of cheap. You won't miss anything if you don't.

Love the theme and I like the slow-and-steady approach to the physics-based puzzles...except the puzzle-solving gameplay is perhaps too basic to be at all memorable or incredible and then you also need to get to the puzzles, which is more slow-paced than the puzzles themselves. You'll only admire it for the first half-hour, but thats it.

Also, I am now aware that the developer has released the final build on Steam. This preview is now a review and my reccomendation stays at "No"!

This game is not for everyone. But I personally love it. Why? Because it's interactive, original, fun, and I can also play it with my 4 year old son. The different machines that you control (cranes, forklifts, cargo trucks, etc.) add interactive layers and scale - for example, you can use a crane to transport a vehicle that can deliver cargo.

The game can be very tedious and annoying at times, but I never cared about this as a player. I like the core concept, the puzzles, the system, and that's enough to keep me going. I'm not writing this to recommend it to everyone, or to my Steam friends. I'm writing this for the person who is attracted by what they see on the screenshots. If you like the trailer, the screenshots, and don't expect AAA polish from a game made by just one man... and, most importantly, if you're patient and are not easily frustrated, definitely buy it.

pros: runs on linux
cons: everything else

Glitches galore. It's easier to glitch a level than to beat it. And those puzzles aren't hard :D

If you are into laughing at really badly written and not tested at all games - this is quite fun. If you want a game to be a game, can't recommend. I don't regret two hours spent in it.
